Inter Milan will be aiming to keep alive their challenge for Italy’s Serie A title when they take on Sassuolo at home on Wednesday in Serie A Matchday 27.

Third-placed Inter made an encouraging re-start after the resumption with a 2-1 home win against Sampdoria in a catch-up fixture on Sunday.

Sassuolo’s good form from before the coronavirus shut-down evaporated as they were hammered 4-1 away by Atalanta.

Four-Goal Hammering at Atalanta

Perhaps it’s better to look at the fact that Sassuolo conceded only five times in the six Serie A games prior to shut-down and pick the draw at +340.

This, however, requires viewing the four goals shipped against Atalanta last weekend as an aberration against a side full of goals.

The Milan side fell to nine points behind leaders Juventus as Italy entered its mid-week spell of Matchday 27 games, although the table-toppers had played one match more after their 2-0 defeat of Bologna on Monday.

Lazio are five points ahead of Inter and also play on Wednesday.

Inter’s victory against struggling Sampdoria was a welcome return to form.

Before the close-down, Inter had suffered two damaging defeats against Lazio and Juventus.

So the victory against struggling Sampdoria was a welcome return to form.

The goals were scored by leading marksmen Romelu Lukaku of Belgium –  who now has 18 league strikes this season –  and the Argentine striker Lauturo Martinez, who has 12 in Serie A.

It was Martinez’s first league goal since January 26 while Lukaku had failed to score in the previous two games. So their return to form will be critical against Sassuolo.

Before the break, Sassuolo’s form had been note-worthy and they had lost just once in six games to climb to 11th place.

But they fell victim last weekend to an Atalanta team who are the leading scorers in the league.

They were four goals down by mid-way through the second-half and only claimed a consolation strike in added time at the end as they slipped to 12th place.

Inter have a six-point lead over fourth-placed Atalanta in the battle for Champions League qualifying places so Antonio Conte’s side can afford to be expansive.

Seven Goals in Meeting Last October

There was a free-scoring 4-3 win for Inter at Sassuolo last October. Lukaku and Martinez both scored twice.

Before that, there was a 0-0 draw when the sides last met at San Siro in January 2019.

In this season’s Serie A, Inter has the third-best home record with eight wins, four draws and only one defeat – against leaders Juventus last October.

It was their only setback in the last 24 home league matches.

Conte’s team are likely to be sharper than Sassuolo having played one match more since the re-start – the Coppa Italia semfinal second leg against Napoli.

By contrast, Sassuolo have the 15th-best away statistics with three wins, four draws and six defeats. They have won only four of their last 22 away matches.

Conte’s team are likely to be sharper than Sassuolo having played one match more since the re-start – the Coppa Italia semifinal second leg against Napoli. After a 1-1 draw, they were eliminated 2-1 on aggregate.

The Inter chief has to cope with an injury crisis in midfield with regulars Matias Vecino, Stefano Sensi and Marcelo Brozovic all set possibly to miss out.

Sassuolo will be without defenders Jeremy Toljan, Fillipo Romagna and Marlon Santos.

In total, Inter have won 17 Serie A matches this season while drawing six and losing only three – scoring 51 goals and conceding 25 in the process.

For Sassuolo, the record is nine wins, five draws and 12 defeats with 42 goals scored and 43 conceded.

Pick: Draw +340
