Win Needed for Reggae Boyz

Jamaica has only participated in one World Cup – France 1998 – but after easily qualifying for the eight-team final qualifying round, they had high hopes of making it to Qatar 2022.

They have, however, had an underwhelming start in the group of eight, winning just once in their opening seven games As a result, they are languishing down in sixth, eight points behind the leaders.

Of more relevance is the fact the Reggae Boyz are already five points adrift of fourth-placed Panama, and so Theodore Whitmore’s men need at least a point from this clash with the USA. With seven games to go, any hopes of them making it to Qatar will hinge on them not losing any more ground on those above them.

Disappointment In El Salvador

Jamaica was very close to getting its second win of the campaign at the weekend when they traveled to El Salvador. After taking an 82nd-minute lead through West Ham’s Michail Antonio the three points were theirs for the taking but they could not hold on and the hosts equalized in the 90th-minute through Alex Roldan.

To concede so late was a body blow for the Reggae Boyz as a win would have taken them to within touching distance of the top half the table, but they have now almost reached the point of no return. A win against the USA would be a massive boost to not only their points total but also to their belief in being able to get to Qatar.

USA Topping the Table

USA’s 2-0 win over rivals Mexico in Cincinnati on Friday was vital as it not only pulled them level on points with their visitors but also took them top of the table thanks to their superior goal difference. The importance of the win became doubly clear once Matchday 7 was complete as victories for Canada and Panama – who are third and fourth in the table respectively – also won and in doing so maintained the four-way battle.

It was two late goals from Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic and Juventus’ Weston McKennie that did the job for USA against the Mexicans; the third time the Stars & Stripes have beaten Mexico in this calendar year.

Fine Year for Berhalter’s Men

This campaign started as a slow-burner for Gregg Berhalter’s after two draws in their opening two games but since then it has been wins all the way aside from a shock 1-0 defeat in Panama, which now looks like a blip rather than a sign of things to come.

Overall it has been a hugely successful year for Berhalter who has overseen trophy wins in the Nations League and Gold Cup, as well as this (so far) successful World Cup qualifying campaign. For his team to end the year with a win would be a fitting way to conclude it.

When these two teams met in Austin on Matchday 4, the USA ran out comfortable 2-0 winners, thanks to a brace from Ricardo Pepi.

Jamaica vs USA Prediction

Jamaica’s campaign has been disappointing so far but they are now unbeaten in three and have reached the point of must-not-lose. They will look to make the most of home advantage, which is likely to have a positive effect, but it is hard to identify the quality in their squad that will deliver them the win they need. A wild card, however, may be Michail Antonio, who is in great goalscoring form in the EPL.

So, for me, there is value here in the +275 on offer for the draw. I expect a fiery, determined effort from the Reggae Boyz; one capable of earning them a valuable point.

Pick: Jamaica and USA to draw (+275) / Michail Antonio anytime scorer (+275)
