Much-Needed Result For Juve in UCL

The post-Cristiano Ronaldo era hasn’t been kind to Juventus to this point. They’ve started off the Serie A campaign in disappointing fashion, failing to win through three games. However, Max Allegri’s side grabbed a very important three points on matchday 1 of the Champions League group stages on Tuesday, burying Malmo, 3-0. Paulo Dybala and Alvaro Morata both got on the scoresheet, while Alex Sandro also bagged a goal.

Although the Swedish giants are by no means a tough opponent, this result was so crucial because Juve clearly needs a confidence boost right now. Going winless through the first few weeks domestically is uncharted territory for a club of this stature and that UCL victory could be a sign of better things to come.

Last weekend, the Old Lady suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Napoli as Kalidou Koulibaly scored the winner late in the second half for the hosts. Prior to that, Allegri’s men lost to newly-promoted Empoli. Scoring goals has been a problem for Juve without Ronaldo leading the line. They’ve netted just three times thus far while conceding five goals. Their backline has been incredibly shaky and will need to be a lot sharper with a vibrant Milan looking to pounce on any mistakes.

In the final third, Paulo Dybala is a player who is expected to step up now that he’s not in the shadow of Cristiano and he’s shown well thus far, scoring once and tallying an assist in league play. Morata will also need to be more productive and the hope is that with both of these players scoring mid-week, they can build off the performance and produce in Sunday’s huge encounter with their rivals.

Breathtaking Start For Milan

After a very impressive 2020-21 season where they secured their spot in the Champions League, Stefano Pioli’s squad is firing on all cylinders once again this term. Milan has a perfect nine points from three Serie A outings, scoring seven goals and allowing just one.

Even more surprising, the Rossoneri have been able to secure two of these positive results without their talisman, Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He finally returned from injury last weekend as a substitute against Lazio and proceeded to score within just seven minutes in his first game since earlier this year. However, he is now dealing with an Achilles issue and will miss Sunday’s fixture.

Milan’s first UCL group stage match was always going to be tough as they traveled to Anfield to face Liverpool on Wednesday. The Italians showed real guts though in a 3-2 defeat. The Reds went ahead early due to a Fikayo Tomori own goal, but Milan fired back as Ante Rebic and Brahim Diaz both scored just minutes before the halftime whistle. The attack was relatively toothless in the second period following Mo Salah’s equalizer in the 48th minute and Jordan Henderson’s winner late in the half, but considering it was their first game in the competition since 2014, it was a respectable showing.

With Ibrahimovic out for this Juve clash, expect Olivier Giroud to be the main man up top. He’s off to a fine start with Milan after joining this summer, already scoring twice in as many appearances.

Juventus vs AC Milan Prediction

While Juve has been immensely struggling, there’s still a ton of quality on this squad. They will certainly have some confidence from their UCL victory, but Milan is also in fine form. That being said, I think you’ll see a hard-fought draw here. Also, the “over” in goals has been hit in the last three meetings, which means it’s a valuable bet once again.
