Seagulls Aim to Build on Upset Win Over Arsenal

The Seagulls are coming off an impressive 2-1 upset win over Arsenal FC in their return to action this past weekend, providing the club with some much-needed breathing room in their battle to avoid relegation, five points up on 18th-place AFC Bournemouth on the Premier League table.

Brighton’s second-half comeback against the Gunners also sealed what is the first victory for the club across all competitions since the calendar turned to 2020. The Seagulls failed to earn three points in 10 straight matches prior to this weekend. However, they did manage to earn a draw in six of those outings and sport a 2-6-3 win-draw-loss record over their past 11 league contests.

Maupay Providing a Spark

The Seagulls’ ability to earn points has hinged on a stingy defense, which has surrendered just four total goals over their past five league matches. Brighton has also allowed just one total goal while earning draws with Wolverhampton and Sheffield United in their past two road outings. That marks a dramatic turnaround after surrendering two or more goals on nine of 11 occasions during a 1-2-8 run on the road to start the campaign.

Goalscoring continues to come at a premium for Brighton, whose two late-match markers against Arsenal enabled them to avoid being shutout for a third straight contest. Leading scorer Neal Maupay has emerged as a key contributor during his first Premier League season. The 23-year-old Frenchman has ended a nine-match scoring drought with two total goals in his past four appearances, including the match winner in this past weekend’s emotional clash with Arsenal, and the Seagulls sport an impressive 5-4-0 record when he has found the back of the net this season.

Leicester on the Rebound Following Draw with Watford

However, Brighton is likely to encounter a surly Leicester squad looking to make amends after failing to slam the door on Watford in their 1-1 draw this past Saturday. Poised to record consecutive wins in league play for the first time since New Year’s Day, the Foxes surrendered a 90th-minute goal to extend their winless run on the road to four matches.

The Foxes have done only marginally better on home turf, posting wins in just two of their past nine league contests at King Power Stadium. But despite their current bout of inconsistency, Leicester look to Tuesday afternoon’s matchup as strong -145 favorites. Leicester blew a golden opportunity on Saturday to pad their position above the line on the EPL table. With Chelsea FC escaping with a narrow 2-1 win over Aston Villa, the Foxes’ lead over the Blues in the battle for third place now sits at just three points, with the club maintaining just an eight-point edge over fifth-place Manchester United.

Vardy Scoring Drought a Factor in Foxes’ Slump

And while Jamie Vardy continues to lead the league with 19 goals, and remains a solid +160 favorite to finish the campaign as top goalscorer, his recent lack of production remains a major concern. Vardy potted a pair of goals in the Foxes’ 4-0 rout of Aston Villa just before the league suspended play in mid-March. However, that marks his only production so far in 2020, with the English star being held off the scoresheet in the club’s other nine matches since Christmas.

Vardy’s drought has certainly contributed to the Foxes’ middling 2-3-4 record during that stretch. However, the 33-year-old tops the odds as a -125 bet to score at some point in Tuesday’s contest, and extended a trend that has seen him find the back of the net in each of Leicester’s past four meetings with Brighton.

With Vardy on track, the Foxes have managed to outscore Brighton by a 9-2 overall margin during their 4-1-0 head-to-head run and will be looking for more of the same on Tuesday. But regardless of how well Vardy performs, look for this to be yet another low-scoring contest, with Leicester extending their dominance over the offensively challenged Seagulls.

Pick: Leicester City (-145); UNDER 2.5 (-115)
