Mexico’s Liga MX heads into Round Seven of its Guardianes competition this weekend with Cruz Azul leading the table with 13 points from their six games.

Surprise package Toluca are a point behind in second place with the first section of the 2020-21 season fully underway despite persisting problems with the coronavirus.

The season is split into two league competitions. The opening Apertura tournament has been renamed as the Guardianes in honor of Mexico’s health workers.

Odds taken on August 27.

Pick 1: Puebla vs Deportivo Toluca

Deportivo Toluca are historically one of Mexico’s most successful clubs but they were nowhere near the favorites for the Championship for the Guardianes title when the campaign began.

But they sit in second place after a run of three straight wins which has included a 3-2 home victory against the highly-rated Tigres UANL outfit earlier in August.

Surprisingly, then – and promisingly – oddsmakers price Toluca as +175 outsiders against 11th placed Puebla who have lost their last three fixtures.

Puebla are the home side at 9:30 pm ET on Friday and are rated at +160 with the tie at +220.

Toluca have won four and lost two of their six outings so far.

They have the league’s current joint second-leading goal-scorer in 28-year-old Argentine forward Alexis Canelo who has hit the net five times.

The current winning streak began with a 2-1 defeat of struggling Atlas away from  home before that 3-2 success against Tigres UANAL.

Toluca are the joint second leading scorers in the league with 11 goals. But they have been suspect defensively and have conceded 10 times in six games.

Their most recent game resulted in a 1-0 home win against Chivas Guadalajara.

Toluca are the joint second-leading scorers in the league with 11 goals. But they have been suspect defensively and have conceded 10 times in six games.

Puebla have won only twice while drawing once and losing on three occasions after a promising start.

The current down-turn began with a 2-1 defeat on the road against Tigres UANL. Then came a 1-0 home defeat by Pachuca who are presently in sixth place.

A 1-0 defeat away against Tijuana followed in their most recent match as the home side ended a two-game losing streak.

Pick: Toluca +175

Pick 2: Atletico San Luiz vs Club America

Lowly Atletico San Luiz host Club America at 9:00 pm ET on Saturday with both teams enduring two-match losing runs.

America are in fourth place courtesy of an impressive opening run in which they won three times and drew once.

San Luis are in 15th spot with only one win, two draws and three defeats to their name.

The dip in form currently affecting both sides makes the draw look attractive at +245.

Atletico San Luis are priced at +195 with America favorites at +130.

America have fallen to pieces defensively in their last two games.

They slumped 4-1 away from home against Queretaro – currently in 10th place – as their encouraging beginning imploded.

San Luis did not secure a win until their fourth fixture when they overcame Tijuana 2-0 away from home.

That was followed by a 3-1 defeat on the road against a Monterrey side which had drawn its previous three games.

San Luis did not secure a win until their fourth fixture when they overcame Tijuana 2-0 away from home.

They have since won 2-1 at home against Chivas Guadalajara. In their most recent game, they fell 3-1 at home against leaders Cruz Azul.

Pick: Draw +245

Pick 3: Cruz Azul vs Necaxa

Cruz Azul were second favorites for the Guardianes title before the season kicked off and have justified that belief in the early running.

With four wins, one draw and one defeat securing top spot, they also have the best goal difference in the competition after scoring 11 times and conceding only five.

That makes them good value for a spread option at home against ninth-placed Necaxa – with a win by two goals for Cruz Azul  priced at +163 (Asian Handicap -1.5 +163).

Cruz Azul are huge favorites for a home win of any kind at -195 with Necaxa at +600 and the draw at +285.

The game is at 11:00 pm ET on Saturday.

The in-form Jonathan Rodriguez of Cruz Azul is among the league’s joint second-leading scorers with five goals in five appearances.

Necaxa have won twice and drawn twice in their last four games with the most recent result a 2-1 home win against struggling Santos Laguna.

The in-form Jonathan Rodriguez of Cruz Azul is among the league’s joint second-leading scorers with five goals in five appearances.

He scored twice in their most recent victory which was a 3-1 win away from home against Atletico San Luiz.

He also hit two in the previous game – a 3-2 home win against Juarez.

Pick: Cruz Azul  Asian Handicap -1.5 +163
