Through five matches so far, the Ligue 1 table looks a whole lot different than previous years. Although it’s still very early in the season, Rennes holds first place, going undefeated.

French giants PSG are sitting outside of the top six currently after losing their first two games. However, they have bounced back with three-straight victories and will look to take that momentum into their meeting with Angers on Friday, who are tied with them in seventh place. In other intriguing fixtures of the weekend, two of the most high-profile clubs in Ligue 1 will clash when Marseille visits Lyon on Sunday.

Pick 1: PSG vs Angers

PSG welcomes Angers to Parc des Princes on Friday. The French giants got off to a dreadful start to begin the Ligue 1 campaign, losing their first two matches as they missed numerous stars such as Neymar and Kylian Mbappe due to COVID-19 and suspensions. However, PSG has responded in recent fixtures, grabbing the full nine points in their last three appearances.

Their last outing was a 2-0 win thanks to Mauro Icardi’s double. The Argentine international currently leads the Parisians in scoring, while the likes of Mbappe have yet to get on the scoresheet through two appearances. Thomas Tuchel’s side is unbeaten in their last 19 matches against Angers as they look to continue their winning ways on Friday.

Angers will be up for a daunting task against the defending Ligue 1 champions, but their recent run dating back to last term will give them some hope. They have won six of their last domestic matches and are fresh off a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Brest on Matchday five. Ismael Traore and Stephane Bahoken lead their side in scoring, both netting twice apiece.

PSG have lost just three times in their last 73 matches on home soil. With their stars slowly getting used to playing full minutes again, I think the hosts will come out with a convincing result, winning by three goals.

Pick: PSG (-835)

Pick 2: Rennes vs Reims

Rennes will be looking to continue their unbeaten streak when they face Reims on Sunday. The current league leaders lost keeper Edouard Mendy to Chelsea, but it hasn’t seemed to hurt them whatsoever. 36-year old Romain Salin has been solid in between the posts, conceding just four goals since Mendy played the opener in a 1-1 draw with Lille.

Julien Stephan’s men have scored 12 goals in just five matches so far, running riot on their opponents after securing an impressive top-four finish last season. However, they’re on a four-match losing streak against their matchday six counterparts, while failing to score once.

Reims have been struggling, losing their last four matches. However, their success against Rennes in recent memory will make them believe a positive result is in reach this weekend. They’ve yet to win this season, conceding eight goals and scoring just four. It’s only a matter of time they actually secure three points and to beat the current leaders would be a feather in their cap as they look to climb out of the bottom of Ligue 1.

I’m going to go out on a whim here and say that Reims will pull out a draw with Rennes.

Pick: Draw (+270)

Pick 3: Lyon vs Marseille

The most intriguing clash of the weekend will see Lyon host Marseille at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais. Lyon hasn’t enjoyed the most encouraging start, winning just once, while also drawing three times and losing one match.

They’ve scored just six times, but Memphis Depay has bagged four after much speculation that he was leaving to join Barcelona. This will be the 100th match between these two sides, with Marseille winning their last meeting in November of 2019. Nonetheless, Rudi Garcia’s squad has been in impressive form at home, winning their last six fixtures.

Marseille have also struggled to begin the campaign, currently sitting in ninth place after a 2-2-1 start. Just like Lyon, they’ve also tied their last two games. They haven’t won away at Les Gones in eleven matches. It’s safe to say it’s a long time coming for Andre Villas-Boas’ side to find a positive result at Parc Olympique Lyonnais.

I believe this could be one of the most exciting matches of the weekend. However, Lyon will grab a much-needed three points, winning by one goal.

Pick: Lyon (-143)
