Reds Close in on Champions League Place

Liverpool’s defense of their EPL title has been disappointing, to say the least, but they have a chance, on the final matchday of the season, to clinch a place in next season’s Champions League. After spending most of the campaign outside the top four and looking unlikely to qualify, a strong run-in, coupled with Leicester City dropping some vital points, has seen them hit the top four at the most opportune moment.

The Reds know now that a win over Crystal Palace will, barring a big win for Leicester at home to Tottenham, earn them that lucrative fourth spot, and so we should expect a typically high-tempo, high-octane display from Jurgen Klopp’s men. While the Reds defense has been shakier this season, due mainly to early-season injuries to the center-back pairing of Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez, as an attacking force they look back to their old selves, in particular Mo Salah, who has finished the season in electrifying form.

Liverpool Flip the Goal Difference

Klopp’s men find themselves in this position thanks to a winning end-of-season run that culminated in a fine 3-0 away victory at Burnley on Wednesday – a result that was significant as it gave the Reds a superior goal difference over Leicester.  For most of the campaign, the Foxes had a favorable goal difference but with Leicester losing in midweek to Chelsea, the Reds’ win at Burnley flipped that, and they are now in the driving seat.

10,000 Fans in Anfield

If Liverpool is able to get the win on Sunday, and assuming Leicester is unable to overturn the goal difference (they will likely need a +5 win), it will represent a success for Klopp, who has had by far this most troubling season since his arrival in the Liverpool hotseat. The injuries to Van Dijk and Gomez, and the poor form of some of his big names led to a disjointed campaign that, significantly, saw them go on a run of six consecutive home defeats.

There will however be 10,000 fans in Anfield at the weekend and Palace will not enjoy the benefit of empty stands that were a huge advantage to those six consecutive visiting victors.

For the Eagles, whose Premier League survival has been confirmed for several weeks, it is a chance to give manager Roy Hodgson a winning send-off, after this week’s announcement of his retirement from the game after a stellar 45-year career. Hodgson will however be forced to ring the changes after his team picked up several injuries in the midweek 3-1 defeat by Arsenal at Selhurst Park, and definitely out will be Eberechi Eze, who suffered a serious Achilles injury and will be sidelined well into next season.

Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Best Bets

There is little here to suggest that Palace has enough left in the tank to upset the Reds, and such is Liverpool’s need for a win it is difficult to see them slipping up. Klopp will demand a high-tempo performance and it is quite possible that, if they score early, they could blow the Eagles away. It is hard to see Hodgson getting a win on his big day.

There is, however, little value in betting on the home win – Liverpool is -670 – and so trying to pick a scoreline and a first goalscorer makes more sense. Given the Reds are on a roll, a repeat of the 3-0 win at Burnley is certainly not out of the question and Salah as the first scorer is always a worthy bet.

Pick: Liverpool to win 3-0 (+600); Salah first goalscorer (+235)
