Lyon vs Red Bull Leipzig Champions League Matchday 6 Odds, Pick & Betting Preview
- The two clubs met on Matchday 1, with Lyon emerging with a 2-0 away win
- Leipzig, currently second in the Bundesliga, has already qualified for the knockout stages
- A win will mean Lyon wins Group G, but a loss would see it eliminated from this year’s tournament
The Champions League group stage comes down to a final match, and while for Lyon, all is still to play for, for Leipzig, it is merely a question of whether it qualifies as Group G winner or runner-up.
While the German club, currently sitting second in the Bundesliga, leads Group G with 10 points, Lyon is lying in joint second, tied with Zenit St. Petersburg on seven points, both three points ahead of Benfica.

Familiar Foe
With Leipzig already through to the knockout stages, Lyon can join it with a win at home on Tuesday. It’s a result the French club is very familiar with, having already beaten its German opponent 2-0 on the road on Matchday 2.
A win for Lyon here would see it go through as the Group G winner; however, it would also progress with a draw providing second-place Zenit St. Petersburg loses away to Benfica. But a defeat would see it eliminated from the Champions League altogether.
In fact, Lyon has lost only one of its last 16 home European games though; however, the club has won just one of its last four home games against German opposition.
Leipz and Bounds
Having already qualified for the last 16, the pressure is off somewhat for the German club. However, if it wants to win Group G, it will have to earn at least a draw on Tuesday.
Luckily for Julian Nagelsmann’s team, it has shown it knows how to win on the road, having won both of its fixtures away from Red Bull Arena in this year’s Champions League.
However, competing in just its third European campaign and second in the Champions League, life on the road has not been kind to Leipzig. Before this season, the club had won just three of its 12 European away matches, and has one win and one loss in France, with its lone success coming at Monaco two years ago.

Domestic Form
Having finished in third place in last year’s Bundesliga, as well as making an appearance in the German Cup final, Leipzig is aiming even higher this year. The club is currently in second behind surprising leader Borussia Monchengladbach.
It is also the leading scorer in the German top flight, with 36 goals in 13 games, with Timo Werner’s 13 goals in 13 appearances the leading threat. The defense has been stout, too, with the 15 goals conceded so far the second-fewest behind Wolfsburg’s 13.
Timo Werner had a direct hand in a whopping 1⃣2⃣ goals in November and with a WhoScored rating of 8⃣.8⃣2⃣, the @DieRotenBullen striker is our Bundesliga player of the month

The same cannot be said for Olympique Lyon, currently languishing in 10th in Ligue 1, with 22 points from 16 games. Though they have scored a respectable 24 goals, good for third in the league, it’s very much been a two-pronged attack with joint top-scorer Moussa Dembele and former Manchester United man Memphis Depay combining for 17 of those goals.
And the defense has been a weak spot so far with the team averaging one goal against per game over their first 16 league matches. That said, with home field and qualification on the line I’ll side with Lyon.
Pick: Lyon +140
