England’s Premier League returns on Wednesday with reigning champions Manchester City at home against Arsenal in the second game of the day.

City are in second place with no hope of retaining the title as they are a massive 25 points behind leaders Liverpool.

Arsenal are ninth with 40 points and are seeking a Europa League place.

The game at 3:15pm ET at the Etihad Stadium is a catch-up fixture after it was twice postponed ahead of the shut-down caused by the Coronavirus crisis.

The form book may be worthless after what will have been a 100-day break from action in the EPL.

Eight Draws On the Road

Given the many uncertainties surrounding the return of EPL action behind closed doors – and the fact that Arsenal have drawn eight times in 13 away matches this season, the draw looks to be good, wide value here. However, Arsenal’s odds for a win are wide enough to take a chance on a surprise, too,

Arsenal won three consecutive times before the shut-down while City lost twice in four games ahead of the suspension of play.

In fact, Arsenal are the competition’s only team unbeaten in 2020, although that record covers a run of only eight matches ahead of the resumption of action.

They have been beaten only once in 11 EPL matches since coach Mikel Arteta – Guardiola’s former assistant at City – replaced Unai Emery in charge last December 20.

However, City may have a psychological edge as they were imperious 3-0 winners when they visited Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium in London last December.

Guardiola’s men have been particularly prolific at home against Arsenal in recent times – scoring 16 times in the last six meetings at the Etihad Stadium.

The London side may also have to cope with the knowledge they have failed to beat any top six team away from home since January, 2015, when they won at City.

Guardiola’s men have been particularly prolific at home against Arsenal in recent times – scoring 16 times in the last six meetings at the Etihad Stadium.

City’s devastatingly effective striker Sergio Aguero has particularly enjoyed taking on the Gunners and has scored 11 times against them in 15 appearances.

Although this has been a disappointing title defence for City, they have won two trophies already – the Community Shield and the Carabao Cup.

They look well-placed for a Champions League qualifying finish. With 57 points, they are 12 ahead of fifth-placed rivals Manchester United.

But the remainder of the season will be played out with City having to deal with the threat of a ban from the UCL next season following an investigation by UEFA into allegations that they broke financial fair play allegations.

An appeal against a two-year suspension form European competition is currently under review.

Both of Wednesday’s teams now have fully fit squads after the enforced break. Most importantly, this could mean a place for City’s influential defender Aymeric Laporte, who missed much of the earlier part of the season.

Defeat at Man Utd Before Shut-down

City’s final match before the shut-down was a 2-0 derby defeat away against Manchester United on March 8.

That was the second setback in four matches following a 2-0 reverse away against Tottenham Hotspur on February 2.

Arsenal’s run of three victories before the close-down began with a 4-0 win at home against Newcastle United on February 16.

However, City had followed that with a 2-0 home win against West Ham United and a 1-0 win away against third-placed Leicester City.

Arsenal’s run of three victories before the close-down began with a 4-0 win at home against Newcastle United on February 16.

Then came a 3-2 victory at home against Everton and a 1-0 win on their own patch against struggling West Ham.

That spell had been preceded by four straight draws.

City have the third best home record in the EPL with nine wins, two draws and two defeats.

Arsenal’s form on the road is only the 12th-best in the league with two wins, eight draws and three defeats.
