Manchester United will be seeking to add some European gloss to an encouraging season of renewal when they meet FC Copenhagen in the Europa League quarterfinal on Monday.

The game takes place at FC Cologne’s RheinEnergie Stadion as part of the UEFA  competition’s  eight-team final tournament in Germany.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team are favorites to win the competition ahead of Italy’s Inter Milan, and are coming off a 7-1 aggregate thrashing of little-known Austrian side LASK in the previous round.

United Winners in 2017

United were winners of the Europa League under the command of Jose Mourinho as recently as 2017.

They are the leading goal-scorers in this season’s competition with 25 and a spread of +265 for them to win by three goals looks attractive (Asian Handicap +2.75 +265).

After a frustrating start to the season, coach Solskjaer turned things around  – with the arrival of influential Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon in January a critical factor in the revival.

Since a 6-1 thrashing of Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup in January, they  have lost just once in 23 games.

They rose up the ranks to finish third in England’s Premier League and claimed a precious Champions League place for next season, although they were 15 points behind second-placed Manchester City.

Since a 6-1 thrashing of Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup in January, they  have lost just once in 23 games – beaten 3-1 by Chelsea in the FA Cup semifinal after the Coronavirus re-start.

They have conceded only 13 goals during that 23-match spell which has included wins in the EPL against Chelsea and Manchester City.

But it is the young attacking players who have claimed most attention, with striker Anthony Martial having racked up a total of 23 goals this season – four of them in the Europa League.

United were group winners in the Europa League while Copenhagen had to advance to this stage via two qualifying rounds in the UCL, and then after their exit, a playoff round in the Europa League before reaching the group stage.

This has entailed 16 fixtures already. They were runners-up in the Danish championship.

Copenhagen’s leading goalscorer is the Senegalese international Dama N’Doye who has 12 goals this season.

Group Stage Winners

After winning their group, United overcame Belgium’s Club Brugge in the Round of 32.

They drew 1-1 away before winning the return leg at Old Trafford by 5-0; setting down a marker for the rest of the competition.

Another 5-0 win followed in the Round of 16 away from home in the first leg against Linz.

When the competition resumed last week, it was a formality for United to wrap up the tie with a 2-1 home win.

Having battled through to reach the last 32 after finishing runners-up in their group, Copenhagen pulled off a notable win in the Round of 32 against Glasgow Celtic.

United could meet fellow Premier League side Wolves  – who take on Sevilla – if they reach the last four.

After a 1-1 draw at home, they triumphed 3-1 in Scotland.

Then came the impressive overturning of the first leg deficit against Istanbul Basaksehir.

Since the retirement of two-time Champions League-winning coach Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, they have reached only one semifinal in Europe – when they won this competition in 2017.

Copenhagen are in their first European quarterfinal and they are facing a major step up in class on Monday.

They have won just once in their last 10 games against English opposition – although this was a 1-0 home defeat of United in the Champions League group stage in November, 2006.

In their only other meeting, United had been 3-0 winners a month earlier at Old Trafford.

The semifinals of the Europa League mini-tournament will be played in Germany next Sunday and Monday.

The final will be in the Cologne arena on Friday, August 21.
