Nantes vs Toulouse Preview

Les Canaris made it to their second successive final courtesy of a narrow 1-0 win over Lyon in the semi-final and will be hoping that, like last season, they can go all the way and lift the trophy.

This is the second season running where they have been able to put aside their poor league form and save their best for the cup. Last season, while lifting the cup, they finished a disappointing ninth, but domestically this season has been even worse, and they currently are 16th – just one place above the drop zone.

Poor League Form For Les Canaris

Incredibly, in this competition – which they won last season with victory over Nice in the final – they have won 11 games in a row, and haven’t lost since suffering a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Lens in 2021-21. They made up for that defeat, however, by beating Lens 2-1 in this season’s quarter-final.

Antoine Kombouare’s side will clearly fancy their chances given what a lucky competition has been for them but will have to overcome some poor Ligue 1 form where they are nine without a win.

All Eyes on Coupe de France for Toulouse

For Toulouse, currently 12th in Ligue 1, there are no lingering relegation worries, so it is with freedom that they head to the Stade de France. The chance of winning their first-ever Coupe de France final has been their main focus since their semi-final penalty shootout win over Ligue 2 strugglers, Annecy – a considerable advantage over relegation-threatened, Nantes.

While Les Violets are aiming to win it for the first time, they made it to the semifinals twice before – in 1985 and 2009, when they were beaten by PSG and Guingamp respectively.

Poor Recent Form Against Nantes

Toulouse’s current poor league form can perhaps be attributed to the distraction of the cup, but coach Philippe Montanier will not see seven defeats in their last 11 Ligue 1 games as ideal preparation for one of the biggest games in the club’s history.

An additional concern is their recent form against Nantes, where they lost their 2021 Ligue 1 relegation/promotion playoff on away goals after drawing 2-2 on aggregate, and in Ligue 1 earlier this season when they lost 3-1 in Nantes’ Stade de la Beaujoire.

Nantes vs Toulouse Prediction

Nantes may have the pedigree in this competition compared to their opponents, but Toulouse already have the security of knowing they will be playing Ligue 1 soccer next season.

With the freedom that comes from that comfort blanket, I see the value here to be with the Toulouse win whose focus for some weeks now has been on this game.

Nantes vs Toulouse Picks: Toulouse to win in 90 mins (+150) / Over 3.5 goals (+210)
