Napoli Plagued by Injuries, Spotty Offense

The Azzurri are coming off a 2-1 loss to Bologna in Serie A action earlier this week, and now find themselves on a 0-2-6 win-draw-loss run as they prepare for Tuesday afternoon’s Napoli vs Genk matchup at Stadio San Paolo. Napoli will have one more chance to snap their slide prior to facing Genk. The club returns to league action on Saturday afternoon with a visit to Udinese as they try to make up for lost ground on the Serie A table, where they now sit seventh place with 20 points through 14 matches, eight points back of Cagliari for the final spot in next year’s Champions League.

Goal scoring has emerged as a major concern for Napoli during their current swoon. The club has potted one or fewer goals in six of their past eight contests after averaging two goals per game through their first 11 overall matches of the campaign. Injuries have contributed to Napoli’s woes. The club’s leading scorer, Arkadiusz Milik, has been out for almost a month after suffering an abdominal injury, topping a list of sidelined players that numbered as high as eight in early October.

Napoli remain undefeated in group stage action, compiling a 2-3-0 record to remain just one point back of first-place Liverpool heading into Matchday 6, and sport short +135 odds of finishing atop the table.

Despite those struggles, the Azzurri remain poised to advance to the Champions League knockout stage for the first time since 2016/2017. Napoli remains undefeated in group stage action, compiling a 2-3-0 record to remain just one point back of first-place Liverpool heading into Matchday 6, and sport short +135 odds of finishing atop the table.

Genk on the Verge of Freefall

Like Napoli, Genk will be looking to halt a slide of their own as they prepare for Tuesday’s group stage finale as lengthy +1700 underdogs. The Belgian side enters a First Division A clash with Cercle Brugge on Saturday riding a three-match losing streak, and have failed to earn a win in eight outings across all competitions.

De Smurfen’s woes extend to their play in Champions League group stage action, where they are winless through their first five matches, and already eliminated from contention to advance. And Genk’s shaky defense of late may be just what the Azzurri needs to snap out of their funk. Genk have surrendered nine total goals over their past three matches, starting with a lopsided 4-1 loss to Salzburg on home turf in their last group stage outing, and have earned the win in just one of 10 road matches across all competitions this season.

However, Napoli can not afford to take their Belgian opponents too lightly. The two sides played to a scoreless draw in their first group stage meeting, at Luminus Arena on October 2, and the Azzurri have scored just once in their past 226 minutes of play on home turf.

Picks: Genk +2.0 (-125); Under 3.5 (-105)
