  • The USA and France meet Friday in quarterfinal action at the Women’s World Cup
  • The Americans haven’t trailed in any game so far in the tournament

We should have a much better read on the USA after Friday (Jun. 29th). Facing France in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Women’s World Cup, it’s easy to make the case that these are the best two sides in the tournament.

Four games into the event, it’s still difficult to tell how much better #1-ranked USA is than the other countries. One sportsbook is sold on the American squad, however. The sportsbook is offering a prop wager on the Americans winning the tournament without ever trailing.

While the favored side of the wager is that Team USA will trail at some point, the odds that they will never fall behind are only +230 as of Thursday afternoon.

The USA is the defending Women’s World Cup champion.

USA Dominance

The Americans opened the tournament by thrashing minnows Thailand, 13-0. But things have grown steadily tighter since then.

There was a 3-0 shutout of Chile, followed a 2-0 blanking of Sweden. Spain gave the USA a tussle in the Round of 16 before succumbing 2-1. The Spaniards did finally achieve the goal of getting a goal on the Americans.

Can the French go one step further and take the lead on the USA?

Collision Course

Ever since the draw was held for the 2019 Women’s World Cup, everyone had this match circled on their calendars. It seemed inevitable that the two sides would win their respective groups and advance past the Round of 16, setting up an epic battle between the host team against the defending champs.

The Americans figure to face a raucous, unfriendly crowd at the Parc de Princes, France’s national stadium in Paris. On the secondary market, some tickets for this game have been going for as much as $5,100.

But the French have not been meeting expectations with their performance thus far in the tournament. In terms of pressure, it’s an interesting question: are the Americans facing more as favorites, or the French in seeking to live up to the hopes of their own fans?

Bigger Tests Ahead

As much as people want to build the French as the biggest threat to the USA, in terms of form, the Americans should be more worried about England and Germany, who figure to be the next teams standing in their way.

England is especially scary. The English smacked Norway 3-0 in the quarterfinals and have been making short work of everybody. Ellen White scored her fifth goal of the tournament in that victory.

The Germans are always solid and have yet to concede a goal in the tournament.

Perhaps the best thing motivating the USA is fear. The 2016 Summer Olympics, where they were stunned in the quarterfinals by Sweden, serves as a reminder to them of what happens if they take their foot off the gas pedal.

This could be the final World Cup go-round for veteran stars like Megan Rapinoe and Carli Lloyd. This time, the Americans won’t surrender. No is decent value at +230
