Poland and Slovakia meet in Group E of Euro 2020 on Monday, June 14 at 1:00 pm EST in the Krestovsky Stadium, St Petersburg.  Poland comes into the tournament off the back of a poor run of form but will be hoping a game against the group’s outsiders will get them off to a winning start and boost their fragile confidence.

Tough Opener for Poland

If Poland is to progress, this opening game is almost a must-win even at this very early stage. With Slovakia regarded as the weak link in this group and with Sweden and Spain to come, any dropped points here could prove costly for their new coach Paulo Sousa, whose start to the job has been underwhelming.

Sousa’s renowned trait of making tactical and personnel changes for each game has not been well received and many have questioned the Polish FA’s decision to replace Jerzy Brzeczek with Sousa early this year, especially after the former had steered his country to these finals. The decision was made, however, after a poor performance in the Nations League qualifiers but in their opening Qatar 2022 qualifiers, the Poles have picked up only one point from games against England and Hungary and only managed a win against the minnows from Andorra.

Lewandowski the Key for the Poles

The Pole’s poor run in World Cup qualifying has been further compounded by two underwhelming results in their recent Euro warm-up friendlies, with draws against both Russia and Iceland extending their winless streak against top-tier nations to over six months – a record they must overcome if they are to progress to the knockout phase of this competition.

On the plus side, they will have Europe’s best striker, Robert Lewandowski, available again after he was rested for the friendlies, and will know that if they give him a decent supply, they will score goals.  Five years ago, in France 2016, they made it to the quarterfinals, where they lost to the eventual winners, Portugal, on penalties.

Record-Breaking Slovaks

Five years ago, in France, Slovakia did brilliantly to make it to the round-of-16 in their first European Championships since becoming an independent country, and with three teams advancing from four of the six groups, they will be looking to repeat that feat. In order to achieve this though, Stefan Tarkovic’s team must look to avoid defeat against the Poles in this group opener.

Slovakia had a tough route to these finals and needed playoff wins over the Republic of Ireland, in the semifinal via a penalty shootout, and Northern Ireland in the playoff final, although former coach Pavel Hapal was surprisingly sacked between those two games.

Since qualification, the Slovaks form has been poor and they have won just two of their last 13 games inside 90 minutes, and along the way have dropped four points against Cyprus and Malta in World Cup qualifying. They did, however, manage a very good home win against Russia; a result they will be looking to draw confidence from ahead of this game.

Slovakia will lean heavily on the experience of defender Milan Skriniar and legend Marek Hamsik, but will be buoyed by draws against  Bulgaria and Austria in the pre-tournament friendlies.

Poland vs Slovakia Best Bets

For Poland, good performances by Piotr Zielinski and Lewandowski will be key if they are to get off to the winning start they need, but those two recent draws for Slovakia should be a guide as the type of performance we should expect from them – they will be solid and will defend deep and in numbers.

As a result, I can see this being a very tight, low-scoring game, one that could hinge on a mistake or a moment of magic. The Slovaks will not be expansive and will be happy to let the Poles have the ball, but I see them earning a point here out of what could possibly be a goalless draw.
