Mexico’s Liga MX Clausura campaign is at a critical stage with one of the most popular clubs, Pumas UNAM, currently outside of the play-off finishing places.

With just three rounds of fixtures remaining, Pumas are in 13th position and face an important home game against Tigres UANL on Sunday.

For Tigres, the picture looks a little rosier in a season that has been embellished by their historic achievement in reaching FIFA’S Club World Cup final last February.

Meanwhile, Pumas are priced at +215 with the draw an inviting prospect at +225.

At the Estadio Olímpico de Universitario in Mexico City, the game kicks off at 1:00pm ET.

Tigres’ Champions League Triumph

Further, Tigres – from Monterrey – are the reigning CONCACAF Champions League holders after beating LAFC 2=1 in last November’s final.

The Mexican league system is split into two separate competitions in each season – the Apertura followed by the Clausura.

Pumas were the beaten finalists in this season’s Apertura section which finished last December after finishing as runners-up in the regular-season table.

However,  they lost five of their opening eight Clausura matches while drawing twice and winning just once.

With 14 games played, they are one position behind 12th-placed Tijuana with both teams having 16 points. Pumas are currently unbeaten in four outings.

Each side has the same goal difference of minus one. But Tijuana has scored 17 goals compared to Pumas tally of 10.

Certainly, things have improved and Pumas are currently unbeaten in their last four outings.

Their most recent result was a 1-0 victory away against bottom club Necaxa last Saturday secured thanks to an 82nd-minute winner from Juan Pablo Vigon.

The current undefeated run began with a 1-1 draw at Juarez on March 13.

Subsequently, there was a 1-0 away win against Atletico San Luis followed by a 2-2 draw at home against Pachuca.

As those results show, this is not a free-scoring team. It is, however, reasonably tight defensively and has conceded more than one goal only four times in its 14 Clausura fixtures.

The leading scorer over the twin Apertura- Clausura sections of this 2020-21 campaign is the Argentine forward Juan Dinenno who has 16 goals in 33 appearances.

Importantly, he has hit good form lately with four goals in the last six games.

The winners then progress to the semifinals where they take on the teams which finish from first to fourth place.

After that, there is a two-legged final to decide the champions.

Both sections have been re-named as the Torneo Guardianes to honor the work of Mexico’s health professionals during the Covid crisis.

Apertura Final Defeat by Leon

Leon was the conqueror of Pumas in last December’s Apertura final with a second leg 2-0 win following a 1-1 draw in the opening game.

Tigres have already enjoyed a memorable season after reaching the final of the Club World Cup.

In Qatar, they were beaten 1-0 by Bayern Munich.

They were the most recent winners of the Clausura in 2019 with the 2020 competition abandoned.

In ninth place with 18 points, their playoff place in the current Clausura is not yet secure.

Their form has picked up with two wins in the last three games – following a poor run of three defeats and two draws,

Last time out they were 3-2 winners away against Juarez – following a 1-0 win at Queretaro followed subsequently by a 3-1 defeat at home against second-placed Club America.

Worryingly, veteran leading scorer Andre-Pierre Gignac has hit the target only once in his last 10 league games since his heroics at the Club World Cup where he scored three times in three games.

So, to sum up, with both these teams in mid-table and in varying form throughout the campaign, a draw looks most likely.

Pick: Draw +225
