We’re down to the last four teams in the CONCACAF Gold Cup, with both semifinals scheduled for Thursday. In the first match of the night, tournament newcomers Qatar will face the United States in Austin, Texas, followed by Mexico facing Canada.

The Asian giants took down El Salvador in a 3-2 thriller on Saturday but almost blew a three-goal lead after conceding twice in a span of just three minutes in the second half. The US meanwhile, beat a tough Jamaica side 1-0 thanks to a Matthew Hoppe header in the 83rd minute.

This will be the first meeting ever between Qatar and the USA.

Qatar Enjoying Time in Gold Cup

After drawing their first game of the competition with Panama, Qatar has been thriving. They’ve won three straight while scoring nine goals during that span and conceding just twice. In fact, Felix Sanchez’s side has netted 12 times already in the Gold Cup, which is more than any other country.

After running through the group stages with victories over the Panamanians, Grenada, and Honduras, it looked like smooth sailing for Qatar in the quarterfinals against El Salvador. Almoez Ali scored a brace in the first half alone, with midfielder Abdelaziz Hatim also getting on the scoresheet in the 54th minute.

But, the Maroons took their foot off the gas pedal in the second half and allowed their oppositions to cut the deficit to just one goal with striker Joaquin Rivas scoring twice for the El Salvadorians. Defensively, Qatar cannot afford to have these mishaps against the US because they have the ability to punish them.

However, Qatar was able to hold on and progress to the semis, despite being outplayed to the tune of 65% possession. Nevertheless, they were clinical when needed, which ultimately proved to be the difference.

Ali has been the leading catalyst up top for Sanchez’s men, bagging four goals in as many appearances. Hatim has also scored three times, while Pedro Miguel and Akram Afif have supplied three assists apiece.

US Eyeing Gold Cup Glory

The Americans have been firing on all cylinders in the Gold Cup, despite missing numerous key players like Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Gio Reyna, who are all back in Europe on club duty.

The MLS-heavy squad has impressed, going unbeaten with a perfect 4-0-0 record. While finding the back of the net has been no issue with nine goals to their name, the backline has been a huge strength. The States have conceded just once in the tournament, which came on Matchday 2 against Martinique.

Sunday’s quarterfinal encounter with Jamaica was no easy task for Gregg Berhalter’s squad though, as they just found a breakthrough late in the second half. It was a gritty fixture with lots of opportunities at both ends, but Hoppe’s winner proved to be enough to send his side through to the semifinals.

The States have had a very well-rounded attack in this competition, with seven different players getting on the scoresheet. Orlando City striker Daryl Dike has been dangerous in the final third, bagging two goals thus far. He will surely be a key figure for Berhalter in Thursday’s clash.

With Qatar possessing several attacking threats, the US will need to be sharp once again in front of keeper Matt Turner. If they can come out victorious, it will be the second consecutive Gold Cup the States appear in the final after finishing as runners-up in the 2019 edition to Mexico.

Qatar vs USA Prediction

I believe this is going to be a very tight-knit match, but Qatar’s vulnerability in the quarterfinals raises concerns. With that being said, I do believe the USA will thrive here in front of their home fans and book their ticket to the Gold Cup final.

Pick: USA -105
