After resuming play from the break with a disappointing 1-1 draw against Freiburg despite controlling much of the game, Leipzig’s title hopes were likely stomped out.
Now seven points back of leaders Bayern Munich, it’s not impossible, but catching the table-toppers is likely out of reach. However, ensuring there will be Champions League play for Leipzig supporters is still a very much attainable goal.
With 54 points, Leipzig sit third, one point ahead of Bayer Leverkusen and two ahead of Borussia Monchengladbach in fifth.
On Sunday, Leipzig broke a streak of three draws with a resounding 5-0 mauling of 15th-place Mainz.
Timo Werner’s Bundesliga record by season for RB Leipzig:
2016/17: 31 games, 21 goals
2017/18: 32 games, 13 goals
2018/19: 30 games, 16 goals
2019/20: 27 games, 22 goalsA new personal best. pic.twitter.com/5Y9VmSL7My

The goals started early with Timo Werner opening the scoring just 11 minutes in and Yousef Poulsen doubling the lead 12 minutes later. Leipzig would take a 3-0 lead into the half and Werner would add his second soon after the restart. Werner then recorded his hat-trick goal and team-leading 24th late on in the 75′ minute. This result was never in question as the gulf in class was just too wide. Leipzig held 60-percent possession, outshot Mainz 21-4 and held the advantage in shots on target 10-1.
Mainz were no match for Leipzig this season, having lost 8-0 earlier this season as well.
Hertha Hot After Restart
Only four teams have come out of the break with two-straight wins. Three of them reside in the top four of the table. The other is Hertha Berlin. Bruno Labbadia became Hertha’s fourth manager this season when he was appointed during the league shutdown. The experienced Bundesliga boss who has previously managed Hamburg, Bayer Leverkusen, Stuttgart and Wolfsburg has his team flying in his first two matches in charge.
The 11th-place side Hertha are making their move for a spot in the top half of the table after back-to-back wins over Hoffenheim (3-0) and Union Berlin (4-0). Overall, Hertha are now undefeated in four having drawn back-to-back matches prior to the league shutdown.
Hertha Berlin’s attack has struck in bunches the past two weeks. Against Hoffenheim all three goals came during a 16-minute period.
Safe to say @HerthaBSC's Cunha has just had a pretty good weekend 👶 pic.twitter.com/8O3QLuJL24

On Friday in the Berlin Derby, they again scored three in a ten-minute span in the second half, before adding a fourth with 15 minutes left in the match. Both Vedad Ibisevic and Matheus Cunha each scored in both matches. While that only gives them five and four goals respectively on the season, it does rank each of them in top-four in team scoring. For Cunha he’s now scored four goals across his past four games.
History Favors Leipzig
These teams have played just seven times in their short history with Leipzig holding a decided advantage with six wins and one loss. Hertha’s win also came back in the 2017/18 season. Leipzig have won each of the past four by scorelines of 6-2, 3-0, 5-0 and 4-2 earlier this season in November.
While Hertha struck first near the half-hour mark in their last meeting, Leipzig scored twice before the half to lead 2-1. They would then add two more late goals in the 86′ and 91′ minutes, before Hertha put one in even later in the 92′. Timo Werner scored twice in the match.
🗣️ #Labbadia:
"We want to be tactically and systematically flexible in order to be react to the opponent and the way they play. We're happy that it's worked well so far but there's still a long way to go. Challenges such as #RBLBSC will help us develop!" #hahohe pic.twitter.com/qJZwJK2KIs

Best Bet
Werner and Leipzig look to have regained their confidence after their rout of Mainz and Hertha’s confidence has to be at an all-time high as well. These sides have yet to play to a game ending with fewer than two goals scored. At least three goals have been scored in six of their seven meetings and at least five have been scored on five occasions. The average goals scored between the two is 4.86.
Hertha have now scored multiple goals in four-straight and none of their past seven in the league have seen fewer than three goals total. I expect them to get theirs on Wednesday, but to come up short against the better opposition in Leipzig. Hertha has just two wins over teams ranked in the top six this season and have a long history of struggles vs Leipzig.
Pick: Leipzig win & OVER 2.5 goals (-143), OR Leipzig win, OVER 2.5 goals & BTTS (+150)
