RB Salzburg on Fire

The Austrian champions have made a superb start to the season, both in Europe and domestically, and are currently unbeaten. Even with a squad ravaged by injuries, they have opened up a more-than-healthy eight-point gap at the top of the Austrian Bundesliga and are two points clear at the top of Champions League Group G.

In their domestic league, RB opened the campaign with an incredible ten straight wins; a run that ended at the weekend when, at the 11th attempt, they were held to a 1-1 draw by SCR Altach. Their Champions League performances have also been eye-catching and although they had to be content with another 1-1 draw in their opener away in Sevilla, they turned a good performance into a good result in game 2 at home to Lille.

Fearless Soccer from the RB Youngsters

Against the French champions, Red Bull was thankful to its penalty king, Karim Adeyemi, who scored from the spot in the 35th and 53rd minutes to give his team a seemingly comfortable two-goal lead, but they were made to sweat for the final half-hour after Lille, through Burak Yilmaz, pulled one back on 62 minutes. They were able to hold on though, despite some nervous moments, and achieved one of their best-ever Champions League results.

Coach Matthias Jaislle has put together a young, energetic, attacking RB team that plays a fearless brand of soccer and they will fancy their chances of making it two UCL wins on the spin on Wednesday against German opponents who have made a tentative start to this competition.

Impressive Draw in Lille

Wolfsburg is yet to register its first win in this season’s UCL but has still mustered two points and is unbeaten. Their opening day goalless draw away in Lille was a quietly impressive effort against a team with genuine ambitions to go deep in this tournament but they were slightly disappointed with their 1-1 draw with Sevilla in game 2; a game they were leading 1-0 until three minutes from time.

Renato Steffen opened the scoring for Wolfsburg in the Sevilla game – one that turned out to be bad-tempered and littered with fouls and cards – but their hearts were broken late on when a VAR review adjudged Joshua Guilavogui to have tripped Erik Lamela. As a result, Guilavogui was shown red and Ivan Rakitic equalized for the Spaniards from the spot.

Unhappy Van Bommel

Wolfsburg coach, Mark van Bommel was less than pleased to see victory taken from his grasp in that fashion, and despite a flying start to the campaign from his men, he now looks to be a coach under pressure with Wolves having gone six games without a win. At the weekend they disappointingly lost 2-0 to Union Berlin; a result that saw them drop to sixth in the Bundesliga table.

Wednesday’s match will be the first-ever meeting between these two clubs in any competition, but worth noting is that the hosts do not have a great record against German opposition, having won just four of their last 10 games – the most recent being  3-1 and 6-2 defeats to Bayern Munich in the group stage of last season’s UCL.

RB Salzburg vs Wolfsburg Prediction

The injury crisis in Salzburg means they will be without Adeyemi and Benjamin Sesko – two of their leading attackers – so this could hinder their productivity in front of goal, but they are in such a good place they will still fancy their chances of making it back-to-back wins. Wolfsburg’s struggles have stemmed from a defensive mindset that has seen them have only 11 efforts on goal in the tournament so far.

With Salzburg still in plus-money for the win, there is some value there, but I have a feeling van Bommel will have Wolves set up in such a way to make it difficult for the Austrians to break them down. At +260, the draw is definitely worth considering, especially as it has been a group of draws so far.

Pick: RB Salzburg and Wolfsburg to draw (+260)
