  • Rennes hosts PSG in Matchday 36 of the Ligue 1 season on Sunday, May 9th at 2pm ET
  • With three games to go in Ligue 1, PSG are four points off top spot with a game in hand on Lille, while Rennes sit back in seventh place

For seven out of the last eight seasons in Ligue 1, PSG have lifted L’Hexagoal at the end of the season. However, with three games remaining, PSG have their work cut out for them in order to raise silverware. Their match this weekend is away to seventh-placed Rennes, and will be no easy challenge. As the Parisians are coming off two defeats to Manchester City in the Champions League, who knows their confidence or fitness levels at the moment.

Manager Mauricio Pochettino decided against using Kylian Mbappe this week in the previously mentioned Champions League match. While the Frenchman continues to recover from injury, he will be out this weekend as well due to suspension from yellow card accumulation.

Additionally, Mauro Icardi and Neymar were poor against Manchester City. The absence of Mbappe was clear, which will make it interesting to see how the gaffer shakes things up against a rigid Rennes defense. Bruno Génésio’s side has only conceded 37 goals this season in  35 games, the third best mark in Ligue 1. Despite this, it is worth mentioning PSG defeated Rennes in the reverse fixture 3-0, without the likes of Neymar, Mbappe or Icardi.

PSG Inconsistent to End Year

It is undoubtable that PSG have faced some hard competition to end the year. When you play Bayern Munich and Manchester City regularly and chase after European glory, it can take a toll, mentally and physically. However, losing to Nantes and Lille is just unacceptable when you have the team sheet and payroll PSG do.

Now, PSG find themselves in quite the predicament with a few games remaining. If they drop points, Lille would nearly have one hand on the trophy. However, if they can win away from home, they would only trail by one point with two games remaining.

Rennes vs PSG Statistics

Rennes
VS
PSG
1.37 Goals per game 2.26
13.5 Shots per game 14.9
56.9% Possession % 60.3%
85.5% Passing % 89.4%

Fitness and motivation are the two main factors probably at play in this game for PSG. They obviously have the talent but as Idrissa Gueye also sits out, you begin to wonder if they have the legs and depth to go out and win this. Bringing in Moise Kean could spark the offense, but will it be enough?

Rennes Without Nzonzi and Camavinga

While most of the talk in this game is centered around PSG, Rennes are also missing a few key pieces. Steven Nzonzi and Eduardo Camavinga will both miss out on this match due to suspension, leaving some holes in their midfield. Martin Terrier will lead the line up front and will be the main source of offense for Génésio’s team.

Despite an awful middle of the season, Rennes have had quite a positive run of form as of late. Ignoring their last match, which was a loss away to Bordeaux, Rennes had won five of their last six Ligue 1 matches. Additionally, the last four times they have played PSG, they managed to win two. While this might seem like a David vs Goliath matchup, all of the pressure is on PSG.

Rennes vs PSG Best Bet

The best bet for this match is the Rennes moneyline with odds of +380. These odds obviously have incredible value but also are not all that unrealistic. Rennes have had two more days to rest compared to PSG and are simply on better form.

Without Mbappe, PSG have to play in a completely different style and as we saw in the midweek they sometimes struggle against a good defense. Rennes does not have an Ederson or Ruben Dias, but they have a strong team unit that knows how to beat this Parisian side.

Pick: Rennes ML (+380)
