The new Bundesliga season begins on the weekend with Bayern Munich, as ever, expected to be the team to beat with Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig among the group of chasers. Bookmakers are also offering odds on the league’s top goalscorer, which no longer includes Timo Werner who left Leipzig for Chelsea in the summer. This leaves Robert Lewandowski as the standout striker in the Bundesliga, but is there anyone who can get close?

We’ll list the odds and offer our best bet.

Four in a Row for Lewandowski?

The first thing to say is that Timo Werner – last season’s runner-up in the Bundesliga goalscoring chart and the closest rival of Robert Lewandowski for Bundesliga’s Golden Boot – is no longer a domestic rival of the Pole. Werner left RB Leipzig over the summer and now appears in the blue of Chelsea in the EPL, and so the question really is, who can even get close to emulating the scoring machine that is Lewandowski?

And the simple answer is, there is no simple answer. Bayern Munich are again expected to boss the Bundesliga and, as such, will likely outscore every other team. Last season, in addition to Lewandowski’s 34 goals, German international Serge Gnabry had an outstanding campaign and chipped in with 12 goals, but it would take an extraordinary turnaround for the former West Brom player to get up into the 20s.

A fit Lewandowski will again be the main man for Bayern and, as such, remains the main man in the whole league. Anyone who scores more goals than the Pole will win the Golden Boot.

Haaland on the Charge

Second-favorite is BvB’s Erling Haaland and with good reason. The Norwegian youngster only arrived in Dortmund in January’s transfer window but managed 12 goals between February and the end of the extended season – an outstanding achievement. On that basis, and scoring at a similar rate, it’s reasonable to expect a fit and healthy Haaland to get in the 20s.

At this point, it’s worth noting that Lewandowski, whose been the league’s leading scorer for the last three seasons, won the Golden Boot in 2018-19 with just 22 goals – that’s 12 less than he achieved last season. So rule Haaland out at your peril, especially with him currently pitched at +400.

A Wildcard in Leipzig?

An interesting one, and quite possibly the wild card of the bunch, is RB Leipzig’s summer signing from Red Bull Salzburg, Hwang Hee-chan. The 24-year-old South Korean arrives with a strong reputation, garnered from scoring plenty of goals in the Austrian Bundesliga, and is the man tasked with filling the boots of Werner. How well he is able to do that will impact greatly on RB’s season, but if he is able to adapt to the increased pace and intensity of Germany’s top league, he could be one to watch.

While he never hit the 20 mark in Salzburg, he’ll now be surrounded by better players and playing in a team who were last season, by some distance, the league’s third-highest scorers. Hee-chan is definitely one to keep an eye on.

Another worth watching is Bayern’s summer recruit from Manchester City, Leroy Sane. While he’s never been known as an out-and-out goalscorer, Sane operating in tandem with Gnabry and in support of Lewandowski will find himself in goal-scoring positions every single game.

Kramaric and Weghorst in the Mix

Hoffenheim’s Andrej Kramaric is another who, if the stars align, could improve on last season’s total of 12. Much will depend on how his team fares this season, but if they can match or improve upon their sixth place in 2019-20, then it’s fair to assume they will better last season’s total of 53 goals. Kramaric, if he stays healthy, will be part of that, and he’s another who’s capable of nudging 20.

Finally, if we’re looking for a real outsider who has a chance of gatecrashing the party, then I’d suggest a modest wager on VfL Wolfsburg’s Wout Weghorst. The giant Dutchman, who appears to have turned down an offer to join Arsenal in the EPL, hit the net 16 times in 2019-20 and has all the attributes required of a 20+ goal striker. A big season for Wolfsburg will mean a big season for Weghorst, so he’s another who’s well worth keeping an eye on.

Pick: Haaland to win 2020/21 Bundesliga Golden Boot (+400). Outsider: Wout Weghorst (+2000)
