Serie A Matchday 16 begins on Saturday, December 4th and we have a massive clash on hand between rivals Roma vs Inter Milan at the historic Stadio Olimpico. The kick-off is scheduled for 12:00 PM EST.

The hosts are coming off a disappointing 1-0 defeat to eighth-place Bologna on Wednesday, but Roma did win two consecutive matches prior. Inter, on the other hand, took care of business against Spezia Calcio mid-week in a 2-0 victory, pushing them to four straight positive results across all competitions.

In their most recent encounter in May, the Nerazzuri ran out as 3-1 winners against Roma. However, they played to a thrilling 2-2 draw in January. In fact, the two Italian giants have shared the spoils in six of their last seven meetings.

Opportunity for Roma to Gain Ground on Top Four

Although Jose Mourinho’s side is still six points behind Atalanta for a Champions League spot, the full three points versus Inter would be huge. The Bergamo outfit is playing league-leaders Napoli, which is surely going to be a tough game.

Roma also faces Atalanta on Matchday 18 next weekend, therefore a good result this Saturday is vital as the halfway point of the campaign nears.

The Giallorossi were very poor against Bologna though, showing little intent in the final third. Mourinho’s men dominated possession and had a boatload of opportunities, but simply couldn’t find the end product. However, they did beat Genoa and Torino in back-to-back games on Matchdays 14 and 15, scoring three goals and keeping two clean sheets.

Roma’s backline has been one of their strongest assets this term, allowing a mere 16 goals. That’s the third-lowest total in Serie A behind Inter then Napoli, who have conceded only nine. Up top, Lorenzo Pellegrini is their leading catalyst with five goals and two assists, but the midfielder is out for the rest of 2021 with a quadriceps injury, which is a huge blow ahead of this Inter clash.

Aside from the Italian’s absence, Tammy Abraham is also facing a suspension for Saturday after being handed a controversial yellow card against Bologna. The former Chelsea man has started all 15 matches thus far, netting four times and supplying a pair of assists. Needless to say, this is going to be a very tall task ahead with Mourinho’s two best attackers sidelined.

Reigning Champions Flying High

After capturing the Scudetto last season, Inter looks very poised to do so once again. They’re currently just two points behind table-toppers Napoli in third spot and a single point behind AC Milan. Their form hasn’t wavered for most of the campaign thus far but lately, it’s been even better.

The Nerazzurri are unbeaten in 10 competitive games, dropping just two points during that span. In the process, Simone Inzaghi’s side has bagged 21 goals and conceded five. Inter are easily the most clinical side in the Italian top flight as well, smashing home a league-best 36 goals.

While their last few opponents haven’t exactly been the most imposing in Shakhtar, Venezia, and Spezia, the title-holders didn’t allow a single goal in each of these fixtures. However, Inter should’ve definitely won by a lot more than just two goals against the Spezia on Wednesday.

The hosts had 63% of the ball and a whopping 31 shots, with 11 hitting the target. Keeper Ivan Provedel prevented this game from getting out of hand though, making an impressive nine saves for the visitors. Inter midfielder Roberto Gagliardini registered his first goal of the campaign, while Lautaro Martinez continued his impressive form with a spot-kick in the second half.

Inzaghi’s group has no new injury concerns for Saturday as Edin Dzeko and Martinez will look to create havoc once again, having already combined for 15 strikes.
