Sevilla Botton of the Pile in UCL

Sevilla sits bottom of the pile after suffering from a failure of being able to convert draws into wins. Three of their four games so far have been drawn, with their first coming on Matchday 1 when they drew 1-1 at home with RB Salzburg. At the time, it looked like a solid start but subsequent draws, no wins and a defeat on Matchday 4 mean that, despite playing some decent soccer, they face an uphill task to make the knockout stages. They simply have to beat Wolfsburg on Tuesday.

The margins have been fine though, as typified in their last UCL game at home against Lille, when they took the lead on 15 minutes through Lucas Ocampo, only for the French champions to come from behind to win thanks to goals from Jonathan David and Jonathan Ikone. It was the French side’s first win of the group and as a result, they now occupy one of the qualifying spots. But this group is so tight and Julen Lopetegui’s side could haul themselves back into contention with three points.

In the La Liga Title Race

Domestically, things have gone very well for Lopetegui’s men and they currently sit third in La Liga having lost just a single game so far. They come into this off the back of what was considered a disappointing 2-2 home draw with Alaves at the weekend but are just two points behind the leaders Real Madrid with over one-third of the season gone.

The draw against Alaves came thanks to the boot of Ivan Rakitic, who struck late into injury time to rescue a point, and maintained an impressive record of Los Nervionenses having scored in every home game this season. They desperately need to translate that La Liga form into some Champions League wins starting on Tuesday.

The Kohfeldt Effect

Wolfsburg’s poor start to the season has been boosted by a change in manager, with Florian Kohfeldt enjoying a ‘new manager bounce’ after taking over from Mark van Bommel. Three wins and a draw in Kohfeldt’s first four games represent a marked improvement to a team that was struggling, both domestically and in Europe,

One of those victories came in the Champions League when the Wolves beat group-leaders RB Salzburg at home on Matchday 4 to record their first win of the tournament. The win took the Germans to within two points of the group leaders and kept them in with a good chance of progressing to the knockout phase.

Wolfsburg to Go Top?

With Lille and RB Salzburg playing each other on Matchday 5, one or both of them will be dropping some points this week, and so a win here could even take Wolfsburg to the top of the group with just one game to play. While their 2-2 draw with Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga at the weekend was not the perfect preparation for this game, it at least maintained Kohfeldt’s unbeaten run – something that has given his team’s belief and confidence a huge boost.

These two teams drew 1-1 when they met in the Volkswagen Arena in September, and so we should expect another very tight game, especially with the stakes so high.

Sevilla vs Wolfsburg Prediction

While both teams have not had the ideal Champions League campaign so far, they are both in a good place domestically, especially the Spaniards who are well and truly in the title race. This could have impacted negatively on their performances in Europe.

The Spaniards still start as odd-on favorites, but with the Germans on an unbeaten run there looks to be real value here in the +370 on offer for the away win.

Pick: Wolfsburg to win (+370)
