The runner-up spot in Group C of the Champions League could be up for grabs on Wednesday, November 24th when Sporting Lisbon welcomes Borussia Dortmund to the Portuguese capital for a huge Matchday 5 encounter. The kick-off is scheduled for 3:00 PM EST.

Sporting and Dortmund are level on six points apiece behind table-toppers Ajax, who have collected a perfect 12 points from four games. The hosts need to win by two goals here in order to progress to the knockout rounds because of their Matchday 2 defeat to the visitors in Germany. BVB meanwhile could book their ticket to the round of 16 with the full three points in Lisbon.

Despite a poor start to the Champions League campaign where they suffered back-to-back defeats to Ajax and Dortmund, Sporting has vastly improved both domestically and in Europe.

Ruben Amorim’s men are currently riding a nine-game winning run across all competitions, most recently securing a 2-1 victory in the Portuguese Cup last Thursday.

Their last couple of UCL fixtures were extremely convincing, absolutely destroying Besiktas. On Matchday 5, Lisbon put four past the Turkish giants in a much-needed result. Pedro Goncalves netted a brace in the first period alone then Paulinho put his side three goals to the good by the halftime whistle as Sporting ran riot on their oppositions.

During this impressive run for Amorim’s squad, they’ve only conceded four times while scoring a whopping 22 goals. However, their record in the Champions League against German oppositions and BVB, in particular, is concerning. Sporting has lost all three fixtures against their Group C counterparts and tasted defeat against Bundesliga sides a total of 10 times while allowing a dismal 32 goals. Needless to say, history is not on their side.

The Portuguese standouts will be missing several players for this huge clash as well, with center-back Sebastian Coates questionable to feature while striker Tiago Tomas is injured. Jovane Cabral and Ruben Vinagre are also dealing with knocks.

Dortmund Looking to Get Back on Track

The Black and Yellows began the Champions League group stages in great spirits, taking down Besiktas and Sporting. But, their last two games in the competition were very disappointing as Ajax outscored them 7-1. While Marco Rose’s side was missing talisman Erling Haaland, it was still unacceptable for the standards of this club.

Following that last defeat to the Dutch giants, Dortmund then fell victim to RB Leipzig in league action. However, after a two-week international break, BVB bounced back on Saturday with an important 2-1 win over Stuttgart. Donyell Malen, who has been seeing more minutes with Haaland sidelined, bagged his first Bundesliga goal with a wonderful strike from distance. The visitors equalized not long after though before Dortmund veteran Marco Reus saved the day with an 85th-minute winner to seal the three points for his side.

With the Norwegian still injured, Reus is stepping up heavily in the final third and doing what he’s always done best at Signal Iduna; score goals. The German has netted in four straight fixtures for club and country. He will be leading the line once again for BVB on Wednesday.

The visitors have no shortage of injuries, though. Haaland remains out until the new year, while Nico Schulz, Gio Reyna, and Thorgan Hazard are all expected to be sidelined due to various health issues. Nevertheless, a win here can send them through to the knockouts for the fourth straight season.

Sporting vs Borussia Dortmund Prediction

It’s relatively clear who the better team has been lately, but Sporting struggles to find results against Dortmund. Given their impressive unbeaten run though, I do believe the points will be shared here in Lisbon which means the runner-up spot in Group C will remain undecided until Matchday 6. Take both sides to find the back of the net as well.
