USA Seek Revenge for Rio Ouster

The United States will have vengeance in their hearts when they take the pitch against Sweden on Wednesday morning. The Americans have been simply dominant over the past two years, but are still stung by the memory of their heartbreaking loss to Sweden in the quarter-finals of the women’s soccer tournament at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Several members of that edition of the US women’s national team have made the trip to Tokyo, and are prepared for payback.

Veteran Lindsey Horan led the squad with six goals in five matches during Olympic qualifying and added a pair of goals during the USA’s recent stretch of friendlies. Christen Press potted five goals during Olympic qualifying and has maintained a torrid pace leading up to Tokyo 2020, with three goals over her past three outings.

Overall, the Americans have received offensive contributions from up and down their lineup. USA have outgunned opponents by a wide 17-0 overall margin during their current 6-0-0 win-draw-loss run, and have not suffered a defeat on the international stage since their 1-0 loss to Australia at the inaugural Tournament of Nations four years ago. The United States have also remained unbeaten in Olympic group stage competition since 2008. http://mirziamov.ru

Sweden Enjoying Lengthy Unbeaten Streak

While Sweden faces a daunting task in their group stage opener, they have plenty of reason to be confident entering this year’s Olympic tournament. Currently pegged at No. 5 on the FIFA World Rankings, the Swedes currently enjoy an impressive 9-3-0 run across all competitions. The squad was particularly impressive in recent qualifying for the 2022 Women’s Euro, outscoring opponents by a 24-1 margin while going 4-1-0 over that stretch.

A pair of youngsters have been key to the Swedes’ recent success. Lina Hurtig makes her Olympic debut on the heels of a solid performance in Euro qualifying, where she potted four goals in five appearances. Hurtig lagged just one goal back of the team leader, Anna Anvegard. The 24-year-old led the squad with five markers in six qualifying contests and has scored seven times over her past six outings with the national team.

Sweden will need more of the same level of offensive production if they are to overcome their recent scoring woes when facing the United States. The squad currently rides a four-match winless streak in all competitions against the Americans, and have been held off the scoresheet on two occasions during that stretch. And while recent meetings between these rivals have tended to be low scoring, that is set to change in Tokyo. Look for the Americans to make a statement in their Olympic opener by avenging their 2016 loss in Rio with yet another dominating performance.

The Picks: USA -1.5 (+115); OVER 2.5 (-105)
