Clash of Two in-Form Teams

Mexico’s domestic soccer resumes this weekend after the international break, with the game of the round being this intriguing clash between fourth-placed Tigres UANL and Club Leon, who are currently two points behind them in fourth.  With both teams unbeaten in their last five outings, this is a clash of two of the league’s in-form teams, with only leaders Club America and fifth-placed Monterrey having similarly impressive records.

Two wins in their last three for Tigres UNAL, known as the Felinos, have taken them back into the automatic playoff places and not since Matchday 2, when they were beaten 3-1 away at Toluca, have they tasted defeat. They are also the league’s joint-highest goalscorers, alongside Toluca, with 12 goals in their seven games, although they did drop points last time out, just prior to the international break, in an underwhelming 1-1 home draw with mid-table Atlas.

Playoff Hopes for Tigres

This good start represents a significant improvement for Tigres, who finished a lowly tenth in the regular-season table in the Clausura BBVA 2021, the first part of the Mexican domestic season. While tenth was enough to get them into the playoffs they were unable to make any progress and fell at the first hurdle, losing 1-0 to Atlas in the preliminary qualifying round.  After having made this impressive, solid start to the second part of the season, Tigres will hope to comfortably qualify for the playoffs and then go further in the tournament.

Club Leon Keeping Pressure on Club America

Saturday’s visitors have had a good start to the campaign and have been able to maintain the pressure on the favorites, Club America, who are just three points clear at the top of the table. But, just seven games in, it has already been something of a rollercoaster for Leon. Two home draws in their last two – against Santon Laguna and Club – denied them the chance of going top ahead of the international break, although their draw with the leaders at least maintained the three-point gap.

July 24 seems a long time ago now, but it was the opening day of the season and literally could not have gone worse for Club Leon. All of their pre-season expectations were shattered in the space of 90 minutes in Pachuca, as the home side ran riot, inflicting on Leon a heavy 4-0 defeat. But their response to this early setback has been outstanding as they reeled off four straight victories, including consecutive 3-0 wins over Mazatlan and Guadalajara.

History favors Tigres

Leon’s excellent run took them into the top three and briefly to the top of the table but while those two recent 1-1 draws have slightly slowed their progress, they look well equipped for a top-four finish. History, however, does not favor them, as they have won just six times in the 26 games these two have met, with the Felinos having won on 12 occasions. When these two last met, in the Clausura back in January, it finished 2-0 to Tigres.

Tigres UANL vs Leon Best Bets

While the home side starts this one as +115 favorites, the fact they still remain in plus money shows just how tricky it has been for the bookies to separate these two. As the league’s joint-leading scorers, Tigres will fancy their chances of outscoring Leon, but the visitors, via some highs and lows in their seven games so far, have shown themselves to be capable of playing some great soccer and getting big wins.

If Leon can hit the form that saw them earn those consecutive 3-0s, they could really make life tough for Tigres and, for me, that is where the value lies. The 2-1 away is also particularly tempting.

Pick: Club Leon to win (+240) / Club Leon to win 2-1 (+1200)
