Both sides have had very good starts to their domestic league seasons as they gear up for their first respective match in Group D. We preview the Tottenham vs Olympique Marseille matchup while looking at various betting odds and giving you our best pick and prediction for this affair.

The Hotspur are comfortable -200 favorites and for good reason. They are undefeated at home so far this year and are coming off a 2-1 victory over Fulham. Some analysts see Tottenham as a good dark horse pick to win the tournament with Champions League odds of +1600.

Marseille is also off to a terrific start in Ligue 1 going unbeaten through six games, but their recent Champions League record is very poor. Les Phocéens have lost 11 of their last 12 group stage games and facing an in-form Tottenham side on the road is a less than ideal proposition to open the tournament.

Over/Under and Spread

Both teams have been stingy in conceding goals to opposition so far this season. Marseille, in particular, have clean sheets in each of their last three matches. The Over for this game sits at 2.5 goals with odds of -135, while the under pays +105.

Tottenham have given up five goals from their first six matches and boast one of the best keepers in all of Europe with 35-year-old Frenchman, Hugo Lloris.

Harry Kane currently sits third in the Premier League with five goals and the oddsmakers fancy the striker’s chances of scoring in his return to Champions League action. You can count on him being anxious to find the back of the net with odds of -125 to score anytime.

It appears as though Antonio Conte will have some interesting lineup decisions to make with Son Heung-Min rumored to be dropped from the starting XI after a slow start to the season. Richarlison was excellent against Fulham providing an assist before seeing a late strike of his own ruled out.

For Marseille, Dimitri Payet might miss out on returning to the field in England as he is dealing with a calf issue. To make matters worse, Alexis Sanchez will also miss out on this clash due to suspension, limiting Igor Tudor’s options up front if Payet indeed cannot play.

Tottenham vs Olympique Marseille Pick & Prediction

Both teams will put their best squads on the pitch for this encounter as Group D will be a difficult one to navigate through with last year’s Europa Cup winners, Eintracht Frankfurt filling out the group along with Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Marseille have been in tremendous form, but have not gone against an opponent such as Tottenham yet this year. With a lack of attacking options, expect the French side to play as conservatively as possible and continue their stingy ways.

Tottenham deserves their favorite status at home in this affair, but expect Marseille to keep things tight. Out of an abundance of caution, move the goals total to under 3.5 (-250) and place a separate bet on a Tottenham victory at -200. They’re both safe plays which is the intelligent move on Matchday 1. If you’re looking for a little more risk, you can combine the two into a same-game parlay over at Barstool Sportsbook for odds of +123.

Pick: Tottenham Win (-200) / Under 3.5 Goals (-250)
