  • The Premier League returns this weekend as Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham side host Everton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London
  • Both of these sides are entering their first full seasons with their new respective managers Mourinho and Ancelloti
  • Currently, the favorites in the match are Tottenham with a moneyline of -115

The first Sunday of the 2019/20 Premier League season is going to have a cracker as Everton travel to London to take on Tottenham Hotspur. Both teams had lackluster performances in England last season. Tottenham sacked Mauricio Pochettino in favor of Portuguese legend Jose Mourinho, and Everton, well, they performed to their usual standards. However, Everton are also starting their first full season under a new gaffer, by the name of Carlo Ancelloti.

These two legends of the game have played each other six times throughout the course of history, with Jose winning four and the other two going in favor of Ancelloti. These games were with Champions League contending sides, however, not Tottenham and Everton. Nonetheless, both of these sides have improved tremendously and will look to kick off their new campaign with a bang come Sunday.

Tottenham’s New Signings Will Play a Role on Sunday

While Tottenham did not spend quite like Everton did this summer, a haul of Matt Doherty Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Joe Hart is not bad. They patched up some key holes and hopefully will not hit the injury bug like they did last year. Additionally, we must not forget how deadly of an attack they have with Kane, Son, Bergwijn and Moura. The only thing Tottenham lacks is that killer instinct, something which Jose has tried to implement in his short reign at the club.

Unfortunately, it looks as Tanganga and Lo Celso will miss out on the Everton match which will shake things up in the midfield and defense. This will give Hojbjerg and Doherty a chance to break into the team and make their mark. While Everton improved their midfield tenfold, their defense is still a rocky road, one which Tottenham should look to exploit. Despite both of these sides being attack-minded, their last two matches ended 1-0 in favor to Tottenham and a one-all draw.

What to Expect from Everton’s New Midfield

The thing most Premier League fans are looking to see on Sunday is how will Everton line up with their new signings? Somehow, someway, Ancelloti managed to bring in Allan from Napoli, James Rodriguez and Doucoure all in the same summer window. Obviously his Everton project has gained some popularity, and now they look like a side who could fight for at least the Europa League. But the question is, will he throw them to the Wolves against Tottenham or ease them into the side?

Personally, I think he is going to start two out of three, with Allan being the one to stay on the bench. Coming over from Italy or France is always hard for foreign players and given the fact that James and Doucoure know the speed and style of play will help them transition much faster. Furthermore, Everton’s offense is a mixed bag with Bernard, Richarlison and Calvert-Lewin. Some days they look like a prime Brazil attack and others they look like a Sunday pub match gone awry. Calvert-Lewin on his day, however, is a dangerous number nine and Ancelloti has the tactical awareness to make him a problem for the Tottenham center halves.

Best Bet

Finally, the best bet for this match is a draw with odds of +250. The value of this pick is great, but also equally as risky. The truth is, Tottenham are the better team right now with more chemistry in their starting eleven.

However, their dynamic and attitude has not changed for ten years, so why should it now just because Jose is the manager. They will not have their massive stadium full of fans come Sunday, which is an advantage for Everton. Overall, I think the Toffees have the individual skill to score a goal or two, but the game will end in a stalemate.

My Pick: Draw (+250)
