Wembley Success for Southgate

England’s round of 16 win over Germany was long overdue as they had not beaten their old foes in the knockout stages of a competition since 1966, but it was a deserved win for Gareth Southgate’s men who have, so far, enjoyed the home comforts of Wembley for every game.

They now have to travel to Rome, where COVID-related travel restrictions mean only a handful of England fans will see the game; a stark comparison to the noisy, raucous stadium that roared them over the line against the Germans. So this will be a different challenge for Southgate’s men, one that will be played out against a very different backdrop. Technically, the English will be superior to Saturday’s opponents but have choked on the big stage in the recent past and so this remains a very big test for Southgate’s young squad.

Time for Some Grealish Magic?

Against Germany, England opted for a 3-4-3 system, which successfully negated the threat of Germany’s very dangerous wing-backs, but against Ukraine, England will start as favorites and are expected to take the game to their opponents. Therefore it would not be a surprise if Southgate returns to the 4-2-3-1 that he used to good effect in the group stages, which could potentially lead to a return to the starting XI for Jack Grealish.

The Aston Villa star offers invention and creativity – qualities that are in quite short supply in Southgate’s squad – and could well be the key here to unlocking Ukraine’s well-drilled defense, allied to England’s strength in defense. Southgate’s men have yet to concede a goal in this tournament.

Ukraine Triumph Over the Swedes

Ukraine’s win over Sweden at Glasgow’s Hampden Park in the round of 16 was one of the greatest wins in the country’s soccer-playing history and sent them to a quarterfinal of a major tournament for only the second time. Now they have had a taste of the big time they will want it to continue for as long as possible and will fancy their chances of causing an upset against England.

The win over Sweden was dramatic in the sense that the winning goal came a minute into injury-time of extra-time, but should not disguise the fact that it was a deserved victory against a side who had looked impressive in the group stages. The key moment came in the first period of extra-time when Sweden’s Marcus Danielson was given a red card but Ukraine was still impressive throughout and led the way in all of the key stats, even when it was 11 vs 11.

Having picked up just three points from a possible nine in the group stages, Ukraine looked nothing like potential quarterfinalists but found knockout soccer to their liking, and no one should underestimate the boost and belief the win over Sweden will have given them.

Their only previous quarterfinal in a major tournament came in the 2006 World Cup when they made it all the way through to the last eight before losing 3-0 to the eventual winners, Italy. While their squad is relatively inexperienced at this level, Ukraine’s manager Andriy  Shevchenko played for many years at the highest level and so will be able to prepare his team well for the biggest game most of them will have played in.

Ukraine vs England Best Bets

England clearly starts as favorites but Ukraine will be buoyed by events in Seville and come into this well prepared and with confidence. Whether or not they are able to handle the occasion will be the big question, with most of the England squad having been used to high-profile games with their clubs.

It is for this reason I see England edging it, and although their fans may have to stay patient and the goal(s) may indeed come late in the game, I see Southgate’s men settling it by a couple of goals in regular time.

Pick: England to win (-235) / England to win 2-0 (+480)
