Can Wales Replicate 2016?

The Welsh will have very fond memories of their last European Championship back in 2016 where Gareth Bale led the Dragons to the semifinals, only to lose to eventual winners, Portugal. However, just a handful of players remain from that squad such as Aaron Ramsey, Bale, and Joe Allen. This will surely be their last kick at the can in this competition as well.

Wales were impressive in qualifying, finishing as runners up to Croatia in Group E with a 4-2-2 record. Goals were few and far between, netting just 10 times in eight games. There is no shortage of attacking talent within the team though, from Bale to Manchester United’s Daniel James.

While Ryan Giggs was dismissed as manager due to an impending court case, interim boss Rob Page has done a solid job at the helm over the last seven months. As for recent results, the Dragons suffered a 3-0 defeat to Euro favorites France in a friendly last week then also played to a scoreless draw with Albania just days later.

At the back, the Welsh have kept three clean sheets in 2021 in five matches. While attacking-mind sides like Les Bleus and Belgium both fired three goals apiece past Wales, they were able to keep the likes of Mexico, Albania, and the Czech Republic at bay.

Bale will surely be the X-factor up top for this side. He found his form towards the ends of the term with Spurs and does own the most international goals of any player in Group A. Bale also found the back of the net in every group stage fixture in 2016. If the 31-year-old can replicate that performance this time around and Wales stays in check defensively, another cinderella run could definitely be in the cards.

Switzerland in Impressive Form

The Swiss march into Euro 2020 as the 13th ranked country in the world and they’ve absolutely lived up to that billing as of late. Switzerland has won five straight matches and are unbeaten in eight, with their last defeat coming in October of last year against Spain in the Nations League.

Vladimir Petkovic’s men throttled Liechtenstein 7-0 in their final tune-up clash last week, while previously defeating the United States just days prior. However, the Swiss have struggled to actually get to the latter stages of this competition. They were knocked out by Poland in the round of 16 five years ago and failed to progress past the group phase in the previous three tournaments before ’16.

But based on where they’re currently ranked in world football, Switzerland will be poised to make some noise. The talent within the squad is certainly there, with Benfica standout Haris Seferovic starring up top.

He’s coming off a fantastic campaign in Portugal, bagging 22 goals in just 31 appearances. The 29-year-old will be looking to carry that form over to Euro 2020 for his country after scoring just once in qualifying, where Petkovic’s side finished at the very top of their group.

Although Xherdan Shaqiri played limited minutes for Liverpool last term, he’s expected to anchor the midfield alongside Arsenal’s Granit Xhaka. Both have been mainstays within this Swiss squad for several years and will be relied upon to provide solidity in the middle of the pitch.

Wales vs Switzerland Prediction

There really isn’t a lot separating these sides in terms of quality. While Switzerland comes into this fixture in much better form, their opponents haven’t been the most difficult.

Both teams are very stable at the back and don’t necessarily score a whole lot. Therefore, a draw is the best bet.

Pick: Draw +205
