Irons in Tight Battle to Avoid Relegation

The Irons return to the pitch following a three-month pause in the schedule in a three-way tie with Watford and AFC Bournemouth at 27 points that leaves the club teetering on the edge of relegation. West Ham have struggled to produce consistent results since seeing an impressive start to the season come to a close. The club opened the current campaign on a steady 3-3-1 win-draw-loss run, but wins have been rare since, with the Irons picking up three points in just four of their past 22 league matches.

A dismal 0-5-1 run on home turf at London Stadium that started in early October has done little to help West Ham in their bid to extend their current stay in the Premier League to an eighth season. However, the Irons have managed to turn things around at home since the start of 2020, going 2-2-1 in their past five home dates, capped by a 3-1 victory over Southampton in their most recent clash at London Stadium, back on February 29.

West Ham Filling the Net at Home

With that victory, the Irons have now potted three or more goals in three of their past five home matches. However, shutting down visiting strikers remains a concern for the club, which has surrendered six total goals over their past three home dates, and two or more goals in seven of their past 11.

That trend is of particular concern ahead of Saturday’s matchup. West Ham have failed to score a single goal while surrendering six total markers in three straight losses to Wolves, capped by a 2-0 road loss back in December. However, the Irons have proven to be far more efficient when facing Wolves on home turf, keeping clean sheets in a pair of victories over their past three meetings across all competitions.

Wolves in Hunt for Europa League Berth

While the Irons look to give themselves some breathing room in the race to avoid relegation, Wolves will resume their bid for a berth in European play when they hit the pitch for Saturday’s matchup as attractive +105 favorites.

Wolverhampton lagged in seventh place on the Premier League table when the season was paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but remain just two points back of Manchester United in the race for fifth place and a berth in next season’s UEFA Europa League.

Wolverhampton on Impressive Run in London

Wolves have remained in contention thanks to a steady run that has seen them earn at least a point in seven of their past eight league outings. Defense has been key to the club’s success. Wolverhampton have kept clean sheets on four occasions during their current 2-3-0 run, and have been particularly impressive on the road, where they have gone 2-1-0 over their past three including a character 3-2 victory over Tottenham Hotspur and a scoreless draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford. The club’s victory over the Spurs also extends a solid run in top-flight matches in London, where they are now unbeaten in their past nine.

A key to success for Wolves will be the play of top goalscorer Raul Jimenez. The Mexican star has already matched the 13 goals he scored last season, his first in the Premier League. More important is the club’s success when he finds the back of the net, with Wolverhampton claiming victory in their last eight league contests when Jimenez scores.

Picks: Wolverhampton +105; OVER 2.0, 2.5 (-125)
