It required only one game in England’s new Premier League season for West Ham United manager David Moyes to take the lead in the running to be the next manager to leave his post.

The Hammers home 2-0 defeat by Newcastle United last Saturday was so abject that there were immediate fears for Scottish coach Moyes’ survival.

He has been installed as the clear +175 favorite by William Hill to be the first boss who will be either fired or leave his position – with a hugely demanding fixture list now facing his embattled team.

Odds taken on September 18 at William Hill

Controversial Tottenham chief Jose Mourinho is second in the running at +700 after his team’s depressing 1-0 opening weekend setback at home against Everton.

However, superstar Gareth Bale looks to be on his way back to the north London club on loan from Real Madrid which is highly likely to help Mourinho have a proper attempt at success in the coming months.

Fulham’s Scott Parker is also priced at +700 to depart. His team are widely tipped for a relegation battle after promotion last season via the Championship playoffs.

Tough Lesson from Arsenal

They were handed a quick lesson about the tough time they face back in the EPL when they succumbed 3-0 at home against Arsenal last weekend.

The interesting outside and well-priced offer here, however, may well be the +1600 quoted for long-serving Sean Dyche to leave his position at Burnley following a summer of suggestions that he is at odds with the club’s ownership.

Dean Smith of Aston Villa could be vulnerable after narrowly beating relegation last season and is another good, wider price at +1200.

Moyes saved West Ham from the drop last season when they finished 16th after a late-season rally.

The sale of talented former club youth player Grady Diangana to WBA provoked concern among the West Ham squad.

But the beginning of the new season has been fractious with player unrest and a failure so far to make any major new signings.

The sale of talented former club youth player Grady Diangana to West Bromwich Albion provoked concern among the West Ham squad with club captain Mark Noble making known his displeasure via a Twitter message critical of the directors.

This unsettled background story has already made Moyes’ job difficult and it is clear why he is the obvious favorite to be the first out of his job.

That scenario is intensified by the team’s daunting upcoming roll call of opponents.

Starting away at Arsenal this Saturday (September 19), they then face Wolves at home, Leicester City and Tottenham away and then Manchester City at home. After that comes a trip to meet champions Liverpool.

Gloomy Prediction Amid Tough Fixtures

Some gloomy speculators are even predicting that West Ham could end up without a point after seven games, given the strength of those forthcoming opponents and the Hammers clear lack of creativity and goal-scoring power.

That would surely demand a change, as reluctant as the club owners may be to endure more upheaval.

Last season represented the second time Moyes had rescued the club from relegation after he pulled off the feat in 2017-18 while on a six-month contract – which was not renewed once it expired.

Mourinho has been in charge at Spurs since November last year and did better than expected when he finished sixth last season.

The imminent return of former Tottenham idol Bale will be a massive boost for the team provided he stays fit. And Mourinho was given backing in the summer to sign Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Fulham’s Parker could not save the team from the drop out of the EPL when he was temprorarily appointed towards the end of the 2018-19 season.

He often delivers trophies in his second season and the defeat against Everton came about partly because the visitors had improved so much after the arrival of superstar James Rodriguez. So Mourinho looks reasonably secure at Tottenham.

Fulham’s Parker could not save the team from the drop out of the EPL when he was temporarily appointed towards the end of the 2018-19 season. But he won promotion back at the first attempt.

The ownership understands that the squad is not strong by EPL standards. But although the backing for Parker is firm, a prolonged run of poor results may prompt a change for change’s sake later in the season.

Dyche has been hailed for his work in establishing small-town Lancashire club Burnley as EPL regulars, finishing 10th last season.

But there was said to be conflict during the summer over the club’s future direction and some observers feel Dyche has taken the club as far as he can go – which may lead to a change in the dug-out.

Pick: David Moyes +175
