Big news on Wednesday night as the Cleveland Browns announced they sent third pick of the 2012 draft, Trent Richardson, to the Indianapolis Colts for a first round pick, in an unexpected trade.

First, no one knew Richardson was on the market; second, he has been on the team just one season, in which he recorded 950 yards and 11 touchdowns.

“That’s football,” said Browns coach Rob Chudzinski. “You deal with those things whether they are injuries or a trade. I believe in this group, and I believe the next guy will step up, and we will find a way and do what we need to do to win.”

Richardson joins DE John Matuszak as the only players since the NFL merger to be drafted in the top three, play their first season and then play for another team the following season.

“This was more about the moment presented itself,” Browns CEO Joe Banner said, “and based on the situation the Colts found themselves in, it wasn’t something where we could say, `Can you wait three weeks to think about this or learn more?’ We thought it was a move to make us better, and we had to make that decision now. We decided to move forward.”

The Colts lost running back Vick Ballard for the season due to a knee injury, and they were stuck with Ahmad Bradshaw.  Well, not anymore.

Now Indianapolis has the first and third pick of the 2012 draft in their roster. Richardson will help Andrew Luck to move the ball, and will give this offense a lot of room to improve.

The NFL future odds for the Browns or the Colts didn’t move at all with the trade.
