  • Top seed Ashleigh Barty is the -162 favorite to oust #14 Victoria Azarenka in their WTA Miami Open Round of 16 match on Monday, March 29th
  • Ninth-seeded Petra Kvitova is the -240 pick over #5 Elina Svitolina, who she’s beaten seven times in nine matches
  • All of the odds, picks and best bets for the WTA Miami Open Round of 16 follow in the story below

When the WTA Miami Open got underway a week ago, there were seven former Grand Slam winners situated in the top half of the draw. As the round of 16 began on Monday, March 29th, only three of them were still left standing.

At least one more of them will be going home on Monday. Current world #1 Ashleigh Barty of Australia, the top seed in Miami and the 2019 French Open champion, is squaring off against two-time Grand Slam winner and former world #1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus. Barty is the -162 favorite in this match.

Elina Svitolina of Ukraine is the fifth seed, but it’s #9 seed Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic who’s the heavy -240 chalk. That’s mainly due to Kvitova’s 7-2 record in head-to-head meetings with Svitolina.

Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka is a massive -320 betting choice over Czech Marketa Vondrousova, even though the latter came out the winner in two of three previous matches.

Action in the WTA Miami Open Round of 16 gets underway at 11 am ET on Monday at Hard Rock Stadium and is being carried by the Tennis Channel.

Ashleigh Barty vs Victoria Azarenka Prediction

Mad Max has nothing on fellow Aussie Barty. She’s also quite the road warrior. She’d be required to quarantine for two weeks were she to return home to Australia due to COVID-19 restrictions there.

Instead, Barty is opting simply to live on the road for six months right through the US Open. She’s been busy sending other female tennis players home from Miami, though.

Barty has already easily dispatched one former Grand Slam winner. In the round of 32, she took out 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia in straight sets 6-3, 6-2.  The Aussie worked harder to drop Kristina Kucova 6-3, 4-6, 7-5 in the first round of the Miami Open. She was actually down 2-5 in the third set of that match.

Azarenka also got to the round of 16 by overcoming a former Grand Slam champion. She dropped Germany’s Angelique Kerber, winner of three Grand Slam events, by a 7-5, 6-2 count.

Barty is the defending champion, winning here in 2019. Last year’s tourney was a COVID-19 casualty. However, Azarenka is a three-time Miami Open champ (2009, 2011, 2016) and looks to be in form and on top of her game.

Pick: Victoria Azarenka (+130), Azarenka 2-1 (+370)

Petra Kvitova vs Elina Svitolina Prediction

Following a first-round bye, Kvitova spent barely an hour on court through each of her next two matches. In the second round, she beat Alize Cornet 6-0, 6-4 in 64 minutes. It took Kvitova 58 minutes to take care of Britain’s Johanna Konta 6-1, 6-2 in third-round play.

Even though world #10 Kvitova holds such a strong head-to-head advantage over world #5 Svitolina, the last time they played it was Svitolina who came away the winner. She was a straight-set victor at the 2018 WTA Finals.

Svitolina needed three sets to get by Shelby Rogers in the second round. In Round 3, the Ukrainian battled past #30 Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 (1), 6-4.

Pick: Petra Kvitova (-240), Kvitova 2-0 (+110)

Marketa Vondrousova vs Aryna Sabalenka Prediction

Two of the three prior clashes between world #7 Sabalenka and world #20 Vondrousva have gone three sets. They’ve played eight sets through those three matches. Vondrousova leads 5-3. In terms of games won, the edge also goes to Vondrousova 34-26.

Vondrousova, the 2019 French Open finalist, also reached the quarterfinals at Miami two years ago. She looks to have found that level of performance again. Vondrousova has beaten Wang Qiang and Belinda Bencic so far in Miami.

Sabalenka barely survived an 11-9 deciding tiebreaker in the second round against Tsvetana Pironkova, winning the match 0-6, 6-3, 7-6 (11). She also needed a first-set tiebreaker to get past #32 Veronika Kudermetova 7-6 (4), 6-4 in the third round.

Pick: Marketa Vondrousova (+235), Vondrousova 2-1 (+490)
