From Qualifers to the Semifinals

Konjuh is coming off a 3-6, 6-2, 6-0 win over her quarterfinal opponent. This showing in San Jose should guarantee her to crack the top 100 in the rankings.

In just over an hour and a half, Konjuh managed to book her spot in the semifinals, but it wasn’t easy. The former Top 20 player committed 17 errors in just the first set, allowing her opponent to take a 1-0 lead. It was the second set where she was able to tighten up her game, committing only 3 unforced errors to nine winners, to force a decider.

The third set was all Konjuh. The 23-year old was able to win the final 10 games, booking her spot in the semifinals.

The Favorite

Since coming back on tour, Collins has been having herself quite the trip. She’s on an eight match winning streak, has managed to reach at least the quarterfinals in four of six events that she’s competed in, and entered this tournament coming off a title win at the Palermo Ladies Open.

In a quest to reach her second final of the season, Collins upset Rybakina in the quarterfinals to become one step closer. In a 7(7)-6(5), 7(7)-6(4) victory, Collins recorded her third Top 20 win of the season.

This match was no easy feat, as there were two tiebreak sets involved. But the American saved six of seven break points on her way to the win.

Despite winning in straight sets, Collins mentioned that she did feel like she was playing behind the entire game. Konjuh may not be as tough of an opponent as Rybakina, but if she’s able to come out strong from the start, she should be in good standing to book her spot in the final.

Head-to-Head

This will be the first meeting between the two. But both players have a similar style of play with their strong forehands, and have been struggling with the execution of certain parts of their game. This should be an interesting, and exciting match.

Best Bet

Earning a spot in the semifinals as a qualifier means Konjuh has played a few more matches than Collins has. Konjuh has five matches under her belt heading into this semi’s, while Collins only has the three. Fatigue and fitness could be a factor that impacts the outcome of this match.

Both players have struggled with their serve this tournament. In Konjuh’s quarterfinal match she recorded eight aces, only to follow it up with seven double faults. Collins is the same. In her quarterfinal match she managed five aces, but six double faults.

Don’t be surprised if this match goes the distance. Both players line up pretty well against each other, but based on how she’s currently playing, and the fact that she may be a bit more fresh than her opponent, expect Collins to earn the spot in the finals.

Best Bet: Collins (-215)
