These two Eastern European talents will square off Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the WTA Miami Open. It’s Svitolina of Ukraine that the oddsmakers are backing solidly to defeat Latvia’s Sevastova.
Svitolina is the -265 favorite to advance to the semifinal stage of a tournament for the first time this season. A +205 underdog, Sevastova also has yet to advance beyond the quarterfinal stage at an event in 2021.

Svitolina Overcoming Kvitova
The first time Elina Svitolina and Petra Kvitova clashed on a tennis court, Svitolina came away the winner. The next seven times they met, Kvitova won every match.
That pattern finally saw a change at the 2018 WTA Finals. World #5 Svitolina downed Kvitova in straight sets by identical 6-3 margins.
A round of 16 showdown with world #10 Kvitova in Miami saw Svitolina continuing the new pattern in this rivalry between top-10 players. She ended up rallying to win the match in a 2-6, 7-5, 7-5 battle.
With the second set deadlocked at 5-5, Svitolina broke Kvitova’s service to gain control of the set. Deadlocked again at 5-5 in the third set, Svitolina again broke the serve of the two-time Wimbledon champion to win the match. The grueling contest lasted 150 minutes.
Sevastova On Top of Her Game
At one time the #11-ranked player in the world, Sevastova seems to be rediscovering that form in 2021. She won a paltry two matches in 2020, but this is already her second quarterfinal appearance of the new season. She was also a quarterfinalist at Adelaide.
Sevastova is enjoying both good tennis and good fortune in Miami. World #3 Simona Halep withdrew prior to their third-round match, giving the Latvian a walkover. At the same time, she’s been impressive in ousting teen sensation Coco Gauff, the world’s #31 player, and Ana Konjuh.
Konjuh was cutting a swath through the draw prior to running up against Sevastova. Earlier action saw Konjuh bouncing two of the world’s top-20 players in Madison Keys and French Open champ Iga Swiatek.
However, she was without answers against Sevastova, falling 6-1, 7-5.
They Have a History
This will be the fourth meeting between Svitolina and Sevastova. Their first clash came at Cali in 2013. Svitolina won 6-3, 7-6. In more recent action, they’ve split a pair of three-set affairs, both on hard-court surfaces.

Svitolina was a 6-7 (4), 6-1, 6-2 winner at Beijing in 2019. They also met in the round of 16 at the 2018 US Open. This time, the verdict went Sevastova’s way by a 6-3, 1-6, 6-0 count.

Svitolina’s victory over Kvitova was her first triumph over a player ranked in the top 10 since 2019. It’s been more than a year since Sevastova posted a triumph over a top-10 player.

Had Sevastova been forced to play Halep, there’d be a better gauge of where her game is at right now. Certainly, she was solid in downing Gauff and Konjuh, but Svitolina is a step up in class from those matchups.
It figures to be a three-set match. However, Svitolina is playing with poise and confidence at the moment, and her overall game is just a notch better than that of Sevastova.
