Barty Looking for Third Title

Barty rallied from a set down on her 25th birthday to earn her spot in the Stuttgart Open final. She defeated Elina Svitolina in a three set battle that lasted just over two hours.

After losing the first set, Barty found herself down 5-4 in the second, but Svitolina was unable to serve it out to win. Barty was down once again in the decider, going down 4-2, but once again Svitolina was unable to close out the match.

Barty was able to convert four of 10 breakpoints in the match to record the win.

Barty will now take on Sabalenka in hopes of winning her first clay court title since winning the 2019 French Open.

Sabalenka Upsets Halep

Simona Halep had said that she had a goal to win all the clay court tournaments this year, and she started off strong. But then found herself up against Sabalenka.

Sabalenka managed to defeat the second seed in just over an hour winning 6-3, 6-2. The 22-year old converted three of nine breakpoints and saved all three she faced.

Sabalenka has seen major improvements in her game since tennis came back last year. The Belarusian entered the tournament with little success on clay, noting that it was not her favorite surface to play on. But the World No. 7 has started to rewrite that narrative, as she’s had no issues navigating wins here this week.

Heading into the finals, Sabalenka will be looking to capture her second title of the year.

Head-to-Head

Sunday’s match marks the seventh time these two players have seen each other over the course of their careers. The head-to-head record is currently split at 3-3.

Their most recent meeting came just last month in the quarterfinals of the Miami Open, where Barty won in three sets.

Best Bet

With how both Barty and Sabalenka are playing right now, this match could really go either way. But the two actually have very different styles of play. Sabalenka is known for her power and attacks, with big groundstrokes. Barty on the other hand is known for her variety of shots, and her touch. Despite how different their approach is, we’ve seen how their respective styles have worked for them on clay this week.

I do think Barty’s shot selection and mixture of soft and strong touches gives her the ability to throw off Sabalenka and her power, which might give the Aussie the edge. But again, this meeting has all the makings for a blockbuster of a match, so don’t be surprised if Sabalenka steals a set.

The Pick: Barty (-152) OR Barty 2-1 (+330)
