The 2021 Italian Open is well underway in Rome with the quarterfinals set to take place on Friday, May 14th. No. 1 seed Ashleigh Barty will look to take on Cori Gauff in the third match of the day. The players are set to take the court at 7:15 AM ET.
It’s no surprise that Barty is entering this match as the favorite. But Gauff has had herself quite a tournament so far, and is coming off two strong upset wins, beating Maria Sakkari, and Aryna Sabalenka.

Number 1 For a Reason
The Australian has eased her way through this tournament so far. And with her Round of 16 win over Veronika Kudermetova. she recorded her tour-leading 27th match win of the season. She defeated the Russian 6-3, 6-3 in just under an hour and a half.

In the match, the 25-year old recorded nine aces and 20 winners. While she broke her opponent four times, Kudermetova was only able to go 1 for 7 on break points in the match. Barty also managed to hold an 80 percent win percentage when landing her first serve.
Barty is now 13-2 on clay in 2021, and earned a spot in the final eight in Rome for the first time in her career.
Third Time’s the Charm?
Gauff has been very impressive this week. The 17-year old defeated World No. 19 Sakkari in the Round of 32, and most recently World No. 4 Sabalenka to earn her spot in the quarterfinals. The American went on to beat Sabalenka 7-5, 6-3 in a match where she outplayed her opponent, and was more consistent from start to finish.

Gauff has now earned her spot in her fourth quarterfinal of the year, and notched her third win against a Top 20 player. Barty will definitely be her toughest task of the week, but is the third time the charm?

There’s not a whole lot to go off of for these two players, as they’ve never seen each other in a singles match before, having only played each other in a doubles match back in 2019. Both players are very strong, and right now Gauff really looks like she’s starting to consistently show improvements.

Barty is currently on her 75th week at World No. 1, and every match she plays she shows us why. But what makes this match particularly interesting is the fact that Gauff beat Sabalenka on her way here. Sabalenka is who beat Barty just last week to capture the title in Madrid.
Coming into Rome, the American really struggled with her double faults, so much so that she was third for the most double faults amongst WTA players. But she didn’t record one against Sabalenka, and has only recorded a total of four over her three matches in this tournament.
But Barty on clay has been next to impossible to beat. She has won 18 of her past 19 matches on the surface, which dates back to her first Grand Slam win at the 2019 French Open.
I think it’s fair to say that Barty will most likely earn her spot in the semifinals here in Rome, but it might be possible that Guaff takes a set. The Australian has yet to drop a set in the tournament, but she has in the past couple tournaments, so it’s definitely a possibility.
