The quarterfinals are already here for women’s singles play at the 2022 Australian Open. The final eight will begin to take the court tonight, with number one seed Ashleigh Barty, going up against American Jessica Pegula.

Barty, who’s Australian Open odds were listed at +240 prior to the tournament starting, has continued to be the favorite to win, as her odds continue to shorten. It’s no surprise she’s the heavy favorite heading into this match, but Pegula is on route to a career best showing at the Aussie Open.

Take a look below for match odds, a preview of each players’ route to the quarterfinals, and a best bet prediction.

Barty’s Unstoppable

The hometown favorite is on the hunt for her first Australian Open title, and with the way she’s been playing this tournament, the books are saying she’s the one to beat.

Not only has the 25-year not dropped a set all tournament, she’s only dropped one set this year, through eight matches. Barty entered the Grand Slam coming off a title win at the Adelaide International, and has dominated every opponent in Melbourne. Over the four matches here, she’s lost just 15 games.

Barty took down her fourth round opponent, Amanda Anisimova 6-3, 6-4,  in just over an hour to book her spot in her fourth straight Aussie Open quarterfinal. She’s lost in either the quarterfinals or semifinals in the last three years.

Despite the score, Barty was challenged by Anisimova, having dropped her serve for the first time in eight matches. She also recorded 17 unforced errors, which is a fairly high number for the World No. 1, especially since she only recorded 23 winners. But at the end of the day, Barty was still able to outsmart her opponent to capture the win.

The top seed’s quest to become the first home women’s champion at the Australian Open since 1978 is still on the table.

Pegula Upsets Maria Sakkari

After dropping the first set of her first match, 27-year old Pegula has been on another level. The American faced her first seeded player of the tournament when she went up against fifth seed Sakkari, but upset the Greek in straight sets.

The American had a breakthrough at the tournament last year, where she made the quarterfinals as an unseeded player. This showing set her up for a very successful year, that saw her rack up seven Top 10 wins. It’s worth noting that she hadn’t recorded a Top 10 win until she defeated Elina Svitolina in the fourth round of the Aussie Open last year.

In this match, Pegula just completely outplayed Sakkari. The two went back and forth in the first set, but after Pegula won the tiebreaker, the end was in sight. She did need to save two break points at 2-1 in the second, but after that it was hers to lose.

Now, Barty will be Pegula’s toughest opponent of the tournament, as she is for anyone. But Pegula is arguably playing her tennis at the moment. This could make it interesting.

Head-to-Head

This is just the second meeting between the pair, with their one and only match happening way back in 2019. Barty won the contest in straight sets that took place in the Round of 128 at the French Open. The Australian was the eighth seed at the time, while Pegula was unseeded.

Best Bet

Once again, do you dare betting against Barty at this moment? It’s true that the Aussie will have to lose at some point, but it really doesn’t feel like it’s going to be happening here.

The 25-year old is just all-around a strong player. From power to agility, there’s not a better women’s player in the game at the moment. Pegula will come out strong and be a force, but what we’ve seen in the past, is when Barty goes up against players like that, she changes her game. She doesn’t rely on her strong groundstrokes and baseline play, she moves into her versatility. She utilizes the entire court, and throws off her opponents.

Best Bet: Barty 2-0 (-220)
