[27] Danielle Collins vs [19] Elise Mertens Prediction

Collins and Mertens will go head-to-head for the third time when they face each other in the fourth round of the 2022 Australian Open Sunday night. The two are set to take the court at 7pm ET. Their current head-to-head record stands at 1-1.

The 30-year old American has found some success at the Aussie Open in the past. She was a semifinalist three years ago, which still stands as her best result in a Grand Slam. Collins had a very strong start to the tournament this year, not dropping a set through her first two matches. She did end up losing the first set against Clara Tauson in the third round, which forced her to piece together a comeback.

She managed to escape the trouble, and went on to win 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Mertens’ best showing at a Grand Slam has also come at the Australian Open. The Belgian reached the semifinals of the tournament in 2018, and this is now the 16th straight time she has reached the third round of a major. And worth noting that ten of those 16 times, she made it to the fourth round.

The 27-year old has been on a tear in Melbourne, absolutely dominating her opponents, not dropping a set through three rounds, and most recently defeating Zhang Shuai 6-2, 6-2.

Collins has won their most recent match, which was at the Round of 16 at the 2021 Chicago 250. But despite that last win, Mertens looks like the player to beat in this match.

Best Bet: Mertens (+110)

[7] Iga Swiatek vs Sorana Cirstea Prediction

This will be the first meeting between Swiatek and Cirstea, as their current head-to-head record sits at 0-0.

Over the past two years Swiatek has earned a name for herself in the tennis world, and will look to reach the quarterfinals of the Aussie Open for the first time. The 20-year old has looked great over three matches this week. She’s yet to drop a set, and has only lost 12 games. Most recently she defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-2, 6-3.

Unseeded Cirstea has provided upsets at the tournament all week. In her opening match, she sent home 20th seed Petra Kvitova, winning 6-2, 6-2. And most recently she upset 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-3, 2-6, 6-2. With those two upset wins, she’s now the only player in women’s singles play to have upset two top-20 players in the first week.

Experience wise, Swiatek has the edge here. With her third round win, she’s now entered the second week in sixth straight Grand Slam, and now her Australian Open odds have shortened tremendously since the start of the tournament.

That being said, Cirstea is aggressive, and won’t shy away from the power and variety that Swiatek possesses. The Romanian will make it tough, but it won’t likely be enough to record her third upset of the tournament.

Best Bet: Swiatek 2-0 (-215)

Kaia Kanepi vs [2] Aryna Sabalenka Prediction
It’ll be very surprising if this match doesn’t go the distance, based on how these two players have been playing all week.

36-year old Kanepi came out to a strong start when she took her first two matches in straight sets, but found herself down against Australian Maddison Inglis in her third round match. After losing the first set, Kanepi went on to win the next 12 of 14 games to secure the win 2-6,  6-2, 6-0.

World No. 2, Sabalenka, has had herself an exhausting tournament so far. The Belarusian has seen all three of her matches go the distance. She has had to come back each match, after losing the first set against every opponent.

In a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win over Marketa Vondrousova in the third round, Sabalenka recorded 10 double faults to only one ace. In order to move on, she’ll have to tighten up on her unforced errors.

These two have a similar style of play in the sense that they like to try and overpower their opponent, with strong groundstrokes and heavy offense.

Neither player is having a perfect tournament, and based on their previous matches, don’t be surprised if this goes three sets. Expect a tight match here.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 sets (+170)
