Krejcikova’s Breakthrough Season
As mentioned, prior to 2021, Krejcikova was primarily known as a doubles players. That’s where her success was, and that’s what people thought of when they heard her name. She has quickly been able to change that this year, with the level of intensity and success she has found on the singles court.
Krejcikova has managed to capture three titles this year alone, including her maiden Grand Slam, winning the French Open back in June.
She earned her points that earned her a spot in this tournament throughout the year, and has managed to show consistency.
Kontaveit will be a tough first round opponent for her, given the past few months she’s had. If Krejcikova is able to forget about the loss in Indian Wells, she has a shot to make a deep run here.

Best Bet
It seems like every match at this tournament has the makings to be a close, exciting one, and this is no exception. Both Krejcikova and Kontaveit have the means to win this match.
Kontaveit has an aggressive style of play, which Krejcikova will have to keep up with and find a way to counter if she wants to stay in the match. On the other hand Krejcikova’s strong ground strokes should benefit from the counts in Mexico. If she is able to mix in some variety on top of his strong baseline play, this will be a really interesting match.
It does seem like Kontaveit has the edge, just given the matches she’s coming off heading into the tournament. But regardless of the winner here, expect the match to go the distance.
