The future of tennis is bright with these two young stars going head-to-head in the finals of the Adelaide International on Saturday, February 27th at 2:30 AM ET for us in North America. Second seed, Belinda Bencic and fifth seed Iga Swiatek will be playing in what is expected to be a close match, and perhaps the first of many meetings in their careers.

Swiatek’s Road to the Finals

Over the course of four matches this tournament, the 19-year old Polish player has yet to drop a set, and has only lost a total of 18 games. As she enters this finals, she’ll be looking to win her first singles title since winning the French Open last year.

Despite Swiatek’s smooth road to the finals, she’s had some tough opponents. She had to get past American Danielle Collins in the quarters, and most recently Jil Teichmann in the semi’s, and she did so with ease.

In a 6-3, 6-2 win over Teichmann, Swiatek has 17 winners and only 12 unforced errors, where she only faced one break point. Swiatek was in control pretty much the entire match. Teichmann had a strong serve off the bat, which made the 19-year old adjust her game in order to return. But once Swiatek broke her opponent for the first time, it was basically game over.

Switek now enters her third career singles final, and first of this season.

Bencic’s Road to the Finals

Bencic had a fairly easy go at this tournament prior to the semifinals, where she saw 16-year old Coco Gauff, who wasn’t going to give up easily.

In a match that lasted two hours and 37 minutes, Bencic eventually beat Gauff 7-6(2), 6-7(4), 6-2, but actually had the chance to win in straight sets but missed a match point.

Since the start of this season Bencic’s been trying to find her rhythm again, and with every win this week, she’s starting to show more and more confidence. In her semi’s match, she record 33 winners to 31 unforced errors, and it was every evident that her timing and anticipation was there again. The confidence she’s building up is allowing her to play more and more instinctively.

With the win, Bencic now enters her 11th WTA final, where she’s bound to be tested once again.

This match has everything needed to be a close, exciting finals. These two don’t know each other that well, having never played each other before. But they do play a similar style of tennis. Both are very technical players, and when playing at their best have great timing and anticipation. Don’t expect any overpowering serves or forehands in this match.
