Alcaraz Garfia Upsets Berrettini

Earlier Friday, Alcaraz Garfia notched his second career Top 10 win, as he defeated World No. 7, Matteo Berrettini in under three hours. The 18-year old Spaniard went on to defeat Berrettini 6-1, 6(2)-7(7). 7(7)-6(5), to earn his spot in the semifinals of the Erste Bank Open.

The young star came out strong, and stunned Berrettini in the first set, only allowing him to win one game. The Italian caught on quick, as he had to make up ground going down a set, and managed to take the second to force a decider.

Berrettini’s serve is always a huge weapon for the Italian, and it once again was, as he recorded 12 aces to just one double fault. But it was actually Alcaraz Garfia’s consistency on serve that overtook that edge that Berrettini usually carries. Alcaraz Garfia managed to land 66 percent of his first serves, and when landed, convert 80 percent of them into a point. He then followed up with a 75 win percentage on his second serve.

In comparison, Berrettini, only managed to land 61 percent of his first serves, 77 win percentage on those first serves, and a 46 win percentage on the second serves.

The tough competition doesn’t stop there for the young Spaniard. He’ll now look towards another Top 10 player in Zverev, as he fights for a spot in the finals.

Zverev Takes Down Auger-Aliassime

The 24-year old German has had an impressive week in Vienna already. The World No. 4 collected his 300th career win against Alex de Minaur in the round of 16, and is coming off a tough three-set win over sixth seed Auger-Aliassime.

Zverev and the young Canadian battled it out from the start. Auger-Aliassime was coming off a strong three-set win that saw him come back after dropping the first set. He came out strong, but Zverev managed to take control in the first set winning 6-4. Auger-Aliassime overpowered Zverev on his serve, recording 12 aces, to the German’s four. But the Canadian also went on to record four double faults, whereas Zverev managed none.

It was a very typical back-and-forth game, with long rallies and high intensity,  that just saw Zverev have the upperhand. He ended up winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, to continue his strong week in Vienna.

He’ll now face another young star in Alcaraz Garfia, who he defeated just a few months ago in Mexico.

Head-to-Head

Alcaraz Garfia and Zverev have met once before, earlier this year in Mexico. The match took place on an outdoor hard court, and Zverev managed to win in straight sets, winning 6-3, 6-1.

Best Bet

As much as Alcaraz Garfia has shown that he belongs this week in Vienna, it’s tough to find a reason to bet against Zverev in this match.

The 18-year old Spaniard has had a breakout season, for sure, as he had only collected one win and one loss prior to 2021, but Zverev will be entering the match with much more experience, and success. And that’s just come with time.

Don’t be surprised if the young star is able to steal a set, but look to Zverev to earn his spot in the final match at the Erste Bank Open.

Best Bet: Zverev (-400)
