Ruud Eases into the Quarterfinals

After dropping his first set of his opening match against American Reilly Opelka, he quickly found himself in the quarterfinals after defeated Diego Schwartzman in straight sets., winning 6-4, 6-3.

After piecing together a comeback against Opelka, Ruud captured his 100th career win with a 6(5)-7(7), 6-0, 7(7)-6(4) victory. And now with his 101th win after defeating Schwartzman, he’s just 14 wins again from tying his father and coach, who recorded a total of 115 tour-level wins throughout his tennis career.

But in his match against Schwartzman, Ruud dominated. He set the tone for the match, and dictated the speed. He recorded six aces, with zero double faults. Managed to landed 82 percent of his first serves, and recorded a 90 percent win percentage when landing that first serve.

Looking to the quarterfinals, Zverev will be a much tougher opponent, who is also playing some of his best tennis. If Ruud can continue to minimize any unforced errors, he might have a shot at the semifinals.

Zverev Begins to Win in Cincinnati

It took seven tries, but Zverev finally recorded his first win at the Western & Southern Open when he defeated Lloyd Harris in his opening match on Wednesday. He was able to keep his momentum going as he went on to beat Guido Pella in the Round of 16 earlier today. The German has yet to drop a set in the tournament.

Once again, the Olympic gold medalist’s strong serve was on display, as he recorded eight aces, while managing an 86 win percentage on his first serve, and following it up with an 89 win percentage on his second serve.

Head-to-Head

Both these players have been constant figures on tour, but have never played each other. This will be the first meeting between the two, and it’s sure to be an exciting one. Both have been having an incredible year, with Ruud actually showing a slightly better record, and one more additional title.

These two match up pretty well together on paper, it’ll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Best Bet

All four of Ruud’s titles have come on on clay this year, but he has now made at least the quarterfinals at four straight tournaments, which includes two on hard courts. He unfortunately doesn’t have the best track record here in Cincinnati, entering this tournament 0-6. But the German has found his rhythm, and has been able to secure a few wins this week.

I do think experience is going to give Zverev the edge here, which will most likely see him earn his way into the semifinals. But either way, I would say that this match will most likely go the distance, regardless of the winner.

Best Bet: Ov 2.5 (+185)
