Ruud’s Three Set Thriller

It took Ruud three sets to take down Lorenzo Sonego in the round of 16, where he eventually won 7-6, 4-6, 6-4.

Despite the match going the distance, Ruud played a fairly good match. He recorded six aces to zero double faults. He landed 67 percent of his first serves, and held a 78 win percentage on his first serve.

With this win, Ruud recorded his 50th win of the season.

Ruud started out strong in this match, rallying from a break down to win the first set, and even came within a point of serving to win in the second match. Sonego managed to find a way back to take the second set, and force a decider.

The third set went back and forth as well, but Ruud was able to take the lead and hold onto it at 5-4, before figuring out a way to win, and move on to the semifinals.

Back-to-Back for Sinner?

20-year old Sinner earned his spot in the quarterfinals of the Vienna Open after defeating Dennis Novak in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-2. The Italian went on to land 63 percent of his first serves, and was able to convent those into a point 76 percent of the time.

The young Italian has now won 20 sets in a row on indoor hard courts, with a 10-match winning streak. Not only is he riding a 10-match winning streak, 17 of his last sets in the streak haven’t gone to a tie-break, he’s been able to dominant every opponent.

Ruud will definitely be one of his toughest opponents in this stretch, as he will be the first Top 10 player Sinner has had to played.

But Sinner holds the 1-0 head-to-head edge over Ruud, and their one and only previous meeting comes at this tournament last year. Sinner will look to repeat what he was able to do in 2020.

Head-to-Head

As mentioned Ruud and Sinner have played each other once before, and Sinner holds the head-to-head edge, specifically since that one match came at this exact tournament last year.

There’s a lot riding of this match for both players. If Sinner beats Ruud, he will overcome Hubert Hurkacz to secure the last qualifying spot in the ATP Finals. If Ruud wins, he increase he’ll have secured his seventh place standing as he looks to make his first appearance at the final tournament of the season.
