  • World No. 1 Iga Swiatek faces Barbora Krejcikova in the Dubai Tennis Championships final Saturday
  • The last time they met, in the final in Ostrava last October, Krejcikova won, but she’s a big underdog in the Swiatek vs Krejcikova odds this time
  • Swiatek is the favorite; we break down the matchup and see if an upset is in the cards for our Swiatek vs Krejcikova prediction

Iga Swiatek is even more heavily favored in Saturday’s Dubai Tennis Championships final (10 am ET) against Barbora Krejcikova than she was for Friday’s semifinal against Coco Gauff. And she won that one 6-4, 6-2.

Swiatek Only Slightly Pushed By Gauff

Coming into their Friday semifinal meeting, Swiatek was 5-0 against Gauff and had never dropped a set.

She’s now 6-0, and still hasn’t dropped a set.

There were a few twists and turns in the first set. But in the end, Swiatek won it going away to reach her second consecutive final in the Middle East.

She did it by doing what most of Gauff’s opponents do: attacked the forehand and broke it down. Gauff’s first serve also was at below 50 percent for the first set, and her success rate with her second serve (0-for-5 in the second set) was inadequate – to say the least.

Still, there were a few nervy moments early on.

Another Three-Set Win By Krejcikova

For Krejcikova, Friday’s three-set victory over No. 3 seed Jessica Pegula was a matter of persistence.

Pegula, whose upper leg was heavily wrapped, started as slowly as the Czech started well. But the American warmed up.

Meanwhile, Krejcikova was getting warned by the chair umpire after the second set for the number of aborted ball tosses.

She was told if it continued, she would get time violations.

It didn’t rattle Krejcikova a bit; actually, it seemed to fuel her in a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 victory.

Last Meeting in Ostrava to Krejcikova

The last two Swiatek vs Krejcikova clashes have been marathons, with each winning one and Krejcikova being in great form for both.

Swiatek won in Rome nearly two years ago, in a squeaker. A  couple of weeks later, Krejcikova won the French Open on the same surface.

And in Ostrava last October, Krejcikova managed to do what not many have done: beat Swiatek in a final.

Swiatek vs Krejcikova Prediction

Swiatek had prevailed in 11 straight finals going into that match. But in a raucous atmosphere that was part Czech Krejcikova supporters and part Swiatek Polish supporters who made the drive (Ostrava is barely 20 miles from the border with Poland), Krejcikova showed her level.

So she knows how to do it. The challenge is doing it again to upset the Swiatek vs Krejcikova odds.

There was some drama about Swiatek waving her arms to potentially distract her opponent. There were tears from Swiatek after it was over. It was one of the best finals of the year on the WTA Tour.

Swiatek might well have turned the page on it all. But seeing Krejcikova across the net a few months later might well color the tenor of this one.

The circumstances in Dubai, obviously, will be quite different in more of a neutral setting with a lot less ambiance. But the way Swiatek has been mowing down her opponents, they’re going to start to get a lot more underdog support against her. Because most people want to see a competitive tennis match.

Swiatek has lost the least number of games (nine) ever for a player going into a WTA 1000 final. But she also has been suffering from a cold or virus all week (as she was in Ostrava, as it happens). We’ll back a closer match than the odds suggest in our Swiatek vs Krejcikova prediction.
