  • Karolina Pliskova is a -137 favorite to defeat Maria Sakkari in their US Open women’s singles quarterfinal on Wednesday, September 8
  • Pliskova is in the US Open quarterfinals for the fourth time in six years
  • Sakkari halted the 10-match winning US Open winning streak of 2019 champ Bianca Andreescu

Maria Sakkari worked overtime to earn a place in the women’s singles quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event for the second time this year. Karolina Pliskova, meanwhile, is wondering whether all of her hard work will finally pay off in a Grand Slam title.

Sakkari and Pliskova will clash in the quarterfinals of the US Open on Wednesday. For Czech player Pliskova, it’s her fourth visit to this stage of the tournament in the past six years. Greece’s Sakkari reached the semifinals of the French Open earlier this year.

World #4 Pliskova is the -137 favorite to defeat world #18 Sakkari. The Greek player has already defeated two players ranked among the world’s top 11 during this tournament.

Pliskova Closing In Again

For the first time since 2018, Pliskova is back in the US Open quarterfinals. She was a quarterfinalist in this event in 2017 and 2018. In 2016, she reached the final before coming up short against Angelique Kerber in three sets.

In the round of 16, Pliskova took out #14 seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia in straight sets  7-5, 6-4. It took her just 95 minutes to dispatch French Open runner-up Pavlyuchenkova. It was the Czech player’s seventh win in nine matches against Pavlyuchenkova. She was aided in her conquest by 34 unforced errors from Pavlyuchenkova.

Through four rounds, Pliskova has dropped a solitary set. That came during her 7-5, 6-7(5-7), 7-6(9-7) second-round victory over Amanda Anisimova.

Pliskova has been a semifinalist or finalist in each of the four women’s tennis Grand Slam events. That’s including a loss to Ashleigh Barty in this year’s Wimbledon final. However, she’s never been able to climb that final hurdle and win a Grand Slam singles title.

Sakkari Survives Marathon

Sakkari, on the other hand, needed to survive an epic three-hour, 30-minute marathon round of 16 match with #6 seed and 2019 US Open champion Bianca Andreescu to get here. The Greek player was a 6-7(2), 7-6(6), 6-3 winner. Her second-set victory marked the first time in four tries that Sakkari won a tiebreaker from Andreescu.

Their match didn’t wrap up until 2:13 am ET on Tuesday morning. That’s the furthest a women’s match has ever gone into the wee hours at Flushing Meadows in US Open history.

The two players also engaged in a grueling battle earlier this year in the Miami Open semifinals. Andreescu was the winner there 7-6(7-5), 3-6, 7-6(7-4).

Prior to the lengthy battle with her Canadian opponent, it had been fairly clear sailing for #17 seed Sakkari. She won six straight sets through the first three rounds, never dropping more than four games in a single set. That was including a 6-4, 6-3 third-round decision over #10 seed Petra Kvitova.

The Rubber Match

This will be the third career meeting between former world #1 Pliskova and Sakkari. Both previous meetings came on the clay of Rome. In the 2019 semifinals there, Pliskova won 6-4, 6-4. A year earlier in the round of 32, Sakkari rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 7-5 decision.

The potent serve of the 6-foot-1 Pliskova is proving to be a devastating weapon at Flushing Meadows. She’s hammered 50 aces over her past three matches. She pounded 24 of them in the win over Anisimova, 20 more during a third-round victory over Ajla Tomljanovic.

Pliskova added an additional six aces while beating Pavlyuchenkova. Interestingly, Pliskova also defeated Pavlyuchenkova en route to her 2016 US Open final appearance.

You have to wonder what #17 seed Sakkari will have left in the tank after her exhausting win over Andreescu. Pliskova is an aggressive player who will certainly push the pace.
