Garin Gets It Going
It’s been an up-and-down season so far for Chilean Garin. He was just 6-6 on the year upon arriving in Spain.
Garin was 1-3 over his previous four matches. That came after a 4-1 start to the year in which he captured the title in his homeland of Chile at Santiago, an ATP 250 event played on clay.
He appears to have again found his game on the clay courts of Madrid. Garin won his first two matches of the tournament in straight sets.

In taking out Medvedev, Garin broke the Russian’s service twice in the deciding set. Garin was a winner on 75-percent of his service points. He smashed six aces and dealt with just one break point the entire match, successfully fending it off.
This is the second time in his career that Garin has ousted the world’s #3 player and last time, the outcome was ominous for him. Garin beat then-world #3 Alexander Zverev at the 2019 BMW Open. That victory was also earned in three sets and was captured by Garin en route to winning the title.
This is Garin’s second trip to the quarterfinals in an ATP 1000 event. He’s never reached the semifinal stage of one of these tournaments.
Berrettini Bashes It
World #10 Berrettini used his powerful serve to take control of the match against Delbonis. The Italian slammed seven aces.
He won a whopping 83-percent of his first service points, continuing his dominance in that department. Berrettini won 85-percent of his first-serve points in his previous match against fellow Italian Fabio Fognini.
