The quarterfinals are here in Germany, and Nikoloz Basilashvili and Laslo Đere will go head-to-head in one of the four matches being played. The two are no strangers to one another, having played each other a few times before.

Đere will enter the match as the favorite, as Basilashvili has actually not played a match here yet at the Hamburg Open due to seeding and an opponent withdrawing.

Two-time Champion

Two-time Hamburg champion, Basilashvili enters the quarterfinals of this year’s tournament, having not played a match. After receiving a bye in the first round due to his number three seeding, the 29-year old’s Round of 16 opponent Sebastian Baez was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

Basilashvili hasn’t played a match since his unfortunate first round loss to Andy Murray at Wimbledon a couple of weeks ago. He’ll be looking to turn it around as the grass court season has concluded, and he’s on familiar territory in Germany. What will be interesting about this quarterfinal matchup against Đere, is that Basilashvili doesn’t currently hold a winning record against the 26-year old. So despite his success at this tournament in the past, he won’t have an easy route to the finals it seems.

Đere Shines in Germany

Heading into the Hamberg Open, Đere hadn’t had the best showings recently during the grass court season. Much preferring the clay courts in Germany, Đere has yet to drop a set, and is heading into the quarterfinals as the favorite.

The Serbian opened his tournament up against seventh seed Jan-Lennard Struff, who he upset 6-4, 7-5, in just under two hours, while saving seven of eight breakpoints.

He then went on to beat Thiago Seyboth Wild in straight sets once again, winning 7(7)-6(1), 6-1. Đere landed 97 percent of his first serves, and was able to convert 65 percent of those to points.

He’ll now look to face Basilashvili, who will be quite rested ahead of their match.

Head-to-Head

As I mentioned, these two have played each other a total of four times before. Đere holds the head-to-head record edge leading 3-1, but it’s Basilashvili who is the two-time champion here. All four of their previous meetings were played on an outdoor clay court, the same as what they’ll play on at this tournament.

Their last meeting was earlier this year at the Sardegna Open, and Đere was able to win that in a very dominant two sets, winning 6-2, 6-0.

There are a lot of factors that make this match really intriguing. Despite not having a match under his belt here this year,  Basilashvili has obviously found success in the past. He’s also managed to capture two titles already in 2021 at the Dubai Open and Munich Open. Coming off the tough loss at Wimbledon, is Basilashvili a little out of match practice, with the amount of downtime he’s had?

Đere has played very well this tournament, with the two matches under his belt. He also has the edge having beat Basilashvili three times before, including just earlier this year.

I think this could be either players’ match, but expect it to perhaps go the distance.
