Two of the young, emerging talents in the WTA are each one win away from facing each other in the final of the WTA Adelaide International. Polish star Iga Swiatek, 19, is expected to be there. Oddsmakers have her pegged, Swiatek, the #5 seed, as the overwhelming -500 odds-on favorite to defeat Jil Teichmann in their semifinal match. This Swiatek vs Teichmann match takes place at 11:30 pm EST on Thursday night.
Swiatek might not get the media hype machine treatment that American sensation Cori (Coco) Gauff, 16, who’s playing in the other semifinal does, but on the court, there’s no question that she’s delivering the goods.
The reigning French Open women’s singles champion, Swiatek has already cracked the top 20 in the WTA rankings. She’s currently #18 in the world.
She was the +550 third betting choice to win in the Adelaide International opening odds.

Swiatek On Unbeaten Roll
Through three rounds of play in Adelaide, Swiatek has yet to drop a set. In her quarterfinal match against American Danielle Collins, the Polish star was up 6-2, 3-0 when Collins was forced to retire with a lower back injury.
Her dominance was apparent in all areas of Swiatek’s game in her match against Collins. She recorded 17 winners, while committing a minuscule four unforced errors through the first set.

Swiatek won all 10 points on Collins’ second serve. She also fought her way to victory in three games where the score was at deuce on her serve. Swiatek successfully held at 3-0 and 5-2 in the first set and 1-0 in the second set.
Should she defeat Teichmann, Swiatek will have advanced all the way to the final of the tournament without facing a single-seeded player.
Teichmann Guts It Out
While Swiatek was given an early pass into the semifinals, Teichmann was forced to sweat out a marathon quarterfinal against Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova. The Swiss lefty won 6-4, 6-7(10-8), 7-5 in a match that lasted two hours and 57 minutes.
Teichmann looked to have thrown away her victory, only to snatch it back with a rally of her own. She squandered five match points in the second-set tiebreak, as Sevastova managed to force a third set.

Former world #11 Sevastova raced to a 3-0 in the third set. That’s when Teichmann put on her rally cap. She staved off two match points in the 10th game of the set before ultimately coming back to win the match.
Rallying is a big part of who Teichmann is. Just two years ago, she’d slumped all the way to 175th in the world. She’s since climbed back to #62.
Now she must draw upon her reserves to face the well-rested Swiatek barely 24 hours after her quarterfinal battle.
Swiatek Has the Swagger
Though they’ve never met in an official match, Swiatek did defeat Teichmann in three sets when they met in an exhibition match last year. That was held during the pandemic shutdown of tournament tennis.
Swiatek has won six of her last seven matches, all in straight sets. Seeking her first appearance in a hard-court final, Swiatek soared past Madison Brengle and Maddison Inglis in the first two rounds of the Adelaide International, dropping only 11 games in the process.

Teichmann already has done some giant-killing in this event. She took out #8 seed Wang Qiang of China 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the round of 16. But Teichmann has been required to do some hard work to get to this stage.
Her last two matches both went three sets. She needed a third-set tiebreaker to defeat Sevastova and a second-set tiebreaker to move beyond Kristina Mladenovic 6-2, 7-6(7-5) in the opening round.

Swiatek’s combination of athleticism and defensive prowess will prove too much for Teichmann. The Polish player is holding every statistical edge over her Swiss opponent as well.
