  • The 2020 US Open will take place August 31-September 13
  • 2019 Champion Rafael Nadal will not be competing
  • Read below for our prediction on players we think can emerge from each quarter

The 2020 US Open will look a little different than years past due to the ongoing global pandemic. Many safety precautions and regulations have been put into place in order for the tournament to be played, but many players still have chosen to not participate.

The draw for the tournament, however, has notable names all leading their quarters, though there are some interesting matches early on in the tournament, with the potential for upsets.

Top seed Djokovic drew a fairly easy quarter, by his standards. With Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer — the other two that make up tennis’s ‘Big Three’ — opting not to compete this year, it opens the door for Djokovic to win his fourth US Open.

He’ll start his tournament against Bosnian Damir Dzumhum, and could face 16th seed John Isner in the fourth round. Isner doesn’t have the best head-to-head record against Djokovic, with a career 2-10 record, but his two wins did come on American soil.

Top-seeded Canadian and a member of the 21-and-under club, Denis Shapovalov finds himself in a quarter with Djokovic, but will not be having to face a seeded player in his first match. Shapovalov will face American wild-card entrant Sebastian Korda.

There’s really no doubt that Djokovic will win this quarter. The three-time US Open Champion and hard court expert is the heavy favorite with -360 odds, and is coming off a final appearance at the Western & Southern Open.

Best Bet: Djokovic (-360)

2020 US Open Quarter 2 Odds

Player Odds from DraftKings
Stefanos Tsitsipas +120
Alexander Zverev +240
Diego Sebastian Schwartzman +1100
Kevin Anderson +1400
Borna Coric +2000
Hubert Hurkacz +2000
Adrian Mannarino +5000
Cristian Garin +8000
Brandon Nakashima +8000
Jack Sock +8000
Egor Gerasimov +10000
Dusan Lajovic +10000
Cameron Norrie +10000
Lorenzo Sonego +10000
Pablo Cuevas +12500

The second quarter looks to be a battle between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev. Both young stars are chasing their first grand slam, and have relatively close odds to win the quarter.

Tsitsipas will play his first match against Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas, and Zverev will take on South African Kevin Anderson.

In this quarter, Tsitsipas is the best bet to win. He also has the more straightforward path compared to Zverev. His biggest test probably won’t come until the third round, where’s he’s most likely going to see Borna Coric.

Coric is one of the few players that tested positive for COVID-19 earlier this summer. He’s coming off an impressive run to the semifinals at the Western & Southern Open, which is being played at the same venue the US Open will take place. This could play into an advantage for some players, including Tsitsipas.

Best Bet: Tsitsipas (+120)

2020 US Open Quarter 3 Odds

Player Odds from DraftKings
Daniil Medvedev +100
Matteo Berrettini +500
Andrey Rublev +650
Grigor Dimitrov +1400
John Millman +2000
Marton Fucsovics +3300
Frances Tiafoe +4000
Nikoloz Basilashvili +5000
Ugo Humbert +5000
Tommy Paul +5000
Casper Ruud +5000
Aljaz Bedene +6600
Benoit Paire +6600
Guido Pella +6600
Jeremy Chardy +10000

2019 US Open finalist Daniil Medvedev will open up against Argentinean Federico Delbonis. Medvedev seems to be the one to beat in this quarter. The Russian obviously had the story of the tournament last year, and if he is able to find a way to channel himself from last year, he could find himself in the final again. The way this quarter works out, and the fact that next highest-ranked player is sixth-seeded Matteo Berrettini, Medvedev looks to be the one to win.

Medvedev is coming off a brutal lost to Roberto Bautista Agut. Agut was blown out in the first set 6-1, but rallied to win the match in three sets at the quarterfinals of the Western & Southern Open.

Despite a disappointing showing at the tournament,  Medvedev is still a good pick in this quarter. The first seeded player he could see who be Guido Pella, who has been having his own issues with COVID testing, having to withdraw from the Western & Southern Open this past week.

Best Bet: Medvedev (+100)

2020 US Open Quarter 4 Odds

Player Odds from DraftKings
Dominic Thiem +220
Milos Raonic +450
Roberto Bautista Agut +500
Felix Auger-Aliassime +1100
Karen Khachanov +1100
Andy Murray +1200
Marin Cilic +1600
Alex De Minaur +1800
Tennys Sandgren +4000
Daniel Evans +5000
Sam Querrey +5000
Miomir Kecmanovic +6600
Philipp Kohlschreiber +6600
Richard Gasquet +8000
Jannik Sinner +8000

The fourth quarter seems to have the toughest draw of them all. Second seed Dominic Thiem is the favorite to win the quarter, but he has some tough competition while looking to shake the rocky year he’s had.

Thiem is coming off a lackluster showing at the Western & Southern Open, getting bounced by Serbian Filip Krajinovic 6-2, 6-1 in the second round. Despite playing and winning a lot of exhibition matches during lockdown, it was his first ATP match since March.

Canadian Milos Raonic may be the one to watch in this quarter. Many have been sleeping on him in recent years, with other young Canadians making headlines. But this US Open could be his opportunity to be a dark horse. He’ll be coming off a finals appearance against Djokovic at the Western & Southern Open, and he might be able to carry the momentum into the US Open. We’ll be able to tell early on whether he’s been able to carry that momentum, or if he’s exhausted from the previous tournament.

Best Bet: Raonic (+450)
